However hard it is to watch this horror, it’s important that we document it, and learn from it. Each and everyone of us can, and we must for the sake of ourselves and our fellow human beings do so. The steps that led the people involved in these atrocities to this point were small, sometimes innocent, or at least uninformed decisions that took many years to reach this level of inhumanity. It starts with denying facts, imagining conspiracies as the root of your own problems, and demonizing your imagined enemies. In this void you are already on a slippery slope that may lead into the abyss. On that note, the events depicted here are based on solid research, and verified sources that are irrefutable. Wherever there is uncertainty, we have mentioned it. The purpose of this documentation is neither to scapegoat any one side, nor exonerate anyone from blame. These are the facts. This is what happened. Think about that, because the perpetrators here were like us, they didn’t come out of their mother’s womb with the intent to torture and murder anyone. And the victims were also like all of us, ordinary people just trying to get on with their lives according to their best ability. They had dreams and goals in life, some of them political perhaps, but mostly they just got on with their everyday life, banal and difficult as that might be, until they ended up in the hands of someone who had learnt to hate them without even knowing them. Remember that – this could have been anyone of us, on both sides of the events. To have that humility is the beginning of a journey to do good.

Spartacus

PS. and if you wonder how we put up with making this kind of content; it’s difficult. I cried bitterly after recording this, and tears still well up when I think about it. While we write it’s easier to turn off, switch on the coping mechanisms, pretend that its just absurd facts and numbers. But when you act out the words… that what defies imagination is suddenly horribly real.

David Irving – Can you trust ANYTHING he wrote?

Published 29 Jun 2020

Can you trust ANYTHING that David Irving wrote? In 1996, David Irving sued Deborah Lipstadt for libel (in the “Irving vs Penguin Books Ltd” trial) because Deborah Lipstadt had said Irving was a Holocaust Denier. Historian Richard Evans was called upon as an expert witness, and he examined Irving’s works for two years, discovering many major factual errors in David Irving’s works. Richard Evans came to the conclusion that Irving cannot even be classed as a “historian”, and says “not one sentence” in any of his speeches or written works can be trusted. Richard Evan’s Telling Lies About Hitler presents a solid case against David Irving that casts serious doubt about every “historical” text that Irving wrote, and this video presents 3 examples from Evan’s brilliant book (this video is not a sponsored video, I genuinely think Evan’s book is brilliant and you should get yourself a copy) that really should make you question the opinions of those who still promote Irving’s works.

Holocaust deniers may continue to deny that the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question” took place, but in actively distorting the evidence, they undermine their own cause. The term “distorian” describes their “writers” better than the term “historian”.

And, in case it isn’t blatantly obvious, I’m NOT a Fascist, NOT a Nazi, NOT a Marxist, and am NOT promoting said evil ideologies. This video is for educational and historical purposes, so that we may learn from the past and prevent it from repeating.

We apologize deeply for the mess up with the listing of countries at the opening – somehow the errors in the list of invaders slipped through the fact check. To be clear: neither Bulgaria, nor Slovenia (obviously) invaded the USSR in June 1941. We’re working on fixing it in some way with YouTube’s help.

At the end of June 1941 the civilian population in what is today Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are facing two lethal enemies. The political police of the USSR – the NKVD, and the invading German Army accompanied by the Nazi killing squads of the SS. That’s simply how it is. That it will get even worse than it is during the last week of June, especially through horrors committed by one of these sides does not change that fact. Because of the importance of these events to humanity, and the difficulty we all face to not equivocate who did what, we would like to remind you that we use a chronological format, that we do not make analytical commentary that looks to what will happen, but let you discover the events as they evolve.

QotD: Distorting the history of science

The most frequently assigned book on science in universities (aside from a popular biology textbook) is Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. That 1962 classic is commonly interpreted as showing that science does not converge on the truth but merely busies itself with solving puzzles before lurching to some new paradigm that renders its previous theories obsolete; indeed, unintelligible. Though Kuhn himself disavowed that nihilist interpretation, it has become the conventional wisdom among many intellectuals. A critic from a major magazine once explained to me that the art world no longer considers whether works of art are “beautiful” for the same reason that scientists no longer consider whether theories are “true.” He seemed genuinely surprised when I corrected him.

The historian of science David Wootton has remarked on the mores of his own field: “In the years since Snow’s lecture the two-cultures problem has deepened; history of science, far from serving as a bridge between the arts and sciences, nowadays offers the scientists a picture of themselves that most of them cannot recognize.” That is because many historians of science consider it naïve to treat science as the pursuit of true explanations of the world. The result is like a report of a basketball game by a dance critic who is not allowed to say that the players are trying to throw the ball through the hoop.

Many scholars in “science studies” devote their careers to recondite analyses of how the whole institution is just a pretext for oppression. An example is a 2016 article on the world’s most pressing challenge, titled “Glaciers, Gender, and Science: A Feminist Glaciology Framework for Global Environmental Change Research,” which sought to generate a “robust analysis of gender, power, and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.”

More insidious than the ferreting out of ever more cryptic forms of racism and sexism is a demonization campaign that impugns science (together with the rest of the Enlightenment) for crimes that are as old as civilization, including racism, slavery, conquest, and genocide.

This was a major theme of the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School, the quasi-Marxist movement originated by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, who proclaimed that “the fully enlightened earth radiates disaster triumphant.” It also figures in the works of postmodernist theorists such as Michel Foucault, who argued that the Holocaust was the inevitable culmination of a “bio-politics” that began with the Enlightenment, when science and rational governance exerted increasing power over people’s lives. In a similar vein, the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman blamed the Holocaust on the Enlightenment ideal to “remake the society, force it to conform to an overall, scientifically conceived plan.”

In this twisted narrative, the Nazis themselves are somehow let off the hook (“It’s modernity’s fault!”). Though Critical Theory and postmodernism avoid “scientistic” methods such as quantification and systematic chronology, the facts suggest that they have the history backwards. Genocide and autocracy were ubiquitous in premodern times, and they decreased, not increased, as science and liberal Enlightenment values became increasingly influential after World War II.

We’re back in Poland to look at the resistance movement. Now, this is still a very controversial topic in 2020. So let us be crystal clear: the whole idea of blaming Poland, or holding Poles responsible for the Word censored by YouTube is absolutely ridiculous. But it is also not correct to claim that not a single Pole did anything to the word censored by YouTube during WW2, that is simply not correct. However, in difference to the rest of occupied Europe there was no organized collaboration, no systematic cooperation with the word censored by YouTube to round up, incarcerate, and murder the word censored by YouTube population. Acts of anti-word censored by YouTube were individual, isolated, and opportunistic in nature. The general rule in Poland was resistance and non-collaboration. We will cover the situation of the word censored by YouTube in Poland in 1940 and 1941 in our next War Against Humanity episode.

An then there are the Soviets … we will not bow to revisionism and propaganda and whitewash history. The way we portray the situation in Soviet occupied Poland in this episode and others is factually correct. Any attempts to obfuscate the Soviet part in the destruction of Poland, the incarceration of Poles, and the mass murders by the NKVD will not be tolerated here. That also goes for arguments to justify, or trivialize these crimes in any way — just like we won’t tolerate word censored by YouTube apologist rhetoric, we will not tolerate Stalinist apologist rhetoric, We will also not debate this, so save yourself the effort and just don’t even start. We have made several videos about the interwar era in Poland in our Between Two wars episode where we also talk about all the things that are usually dragged out to somehow make an argument that the war of aggression and dismantling of Poland by the Red Army and NKVD was the right thing to do have been addressed in those videos. I wrote this paper back in 2003 or 2004 for a college class I was taking (HIST 595 – The Holocaust And Genocide). Today, it sounds a bit amateurish — but I suppose that is to be expected of something written by someone barely out of their teens. I think it could be much better written today, and its subject matter deserves much greater depth, but I believe its conclusions are sound. In particular, I would not be so casual in identifying the perpetrators simply as “the Germans”, as this is an unfair simplification of the guilt for the crimes of the Holocaust.

Some people will interpret this paper though narrow political viewpoints today, which is unfortunate. I shouldn’t have to say it, but obviously such interpretations are certainly not reflective of my own beliefs.

QotD: Italy and the Nazi Final Solution

Filed under: Europe, Germany, History, Italy, Quotations, WW2 — Tags: , , , , — Nicholas @ 01:00

Surprisingly given the bad associations I have with the word “fascist”, Mussolini’s Italy may win third prize in the Righteous Among The Nations stakes. [Hannah] Arendt describes it [in Eichmann in Jerusalem] as “sabotaging” the Final Solution within its borders despite nominal alliance with Germany:

Colorized portrait of Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini in 1940.
Colorization by Roger Viollet via Wikimedia Commons.

The gentlemen of the Foreign Office could not do much about it, because they always met the same subtly veiled resistance, the same promises and the same failures to fulfill them. The sabotage was all the more infuriating as it was carried out openly, in an almost mocking manner. The promises were given by Mussolini himself or other high-ranking officials, and if the generals simply failed to fulfill them, Mussolini would make excuses for them on the ground of their “different intellectual formation”. Only occasionally would the Nazis be met with a flat refusal, as when General Roatta declared that it was “incompatible with the honor of the Italian Army” to deliver the Jews from Italian-occupied territory in Yugoslavia to the appropriate German authorities.

An element of farce had never been lacking even in Italy’s most serious efforts to adjust to its powerful friend and ally. When Mussolini, under German pressure, introduced anti-Jewish legislation in the late thirties he stipulated the usual exemptions – war veterans, Jews with high decorations, and the like – but he added one more category, namely, former members of the Fascist Party, together with their parents and grandparents, their wives and children and grandchildren. I know of no statistics relating to this matter, but the result must have been that the great majority of Italian Jews were exempted. There can hardly have been a Jewish family without at least one member in the Fascist Party, for this happened at a time when Jews, like other Italians, had been flocking for almost twenty years into the Fascist movement, since positions in the Civil Service were open only to members. And the few Jews who had objected to Fascism on principle, Socialists and Communists chiefly, were no longer in the country. Even convinced Italian anti-Semites seemed unable to take the thing seriously, and Roberto Farinacci, head of the Italian anti-Semitic movement, had a Jewish secretary in his employ…

What in Denmark was the result of an authentically political sense, an inbred comprehension of the requirements and responsibilities of citizenship and independence – “for the Danes … the Jewish question was a political and not a humanitarian question” (Leni Yahil) – was in Italy the outcome of the almost automatic general humanity of an old and civilized people.

World War Two

Allied plans to take Trondheim in Norway to allow for larger reinforcements and even bigger aerial support to come in are disbanded as the troops approaching Trondheim are pulled back from Norway. While the Allied efforts in Norway lose force there, the Allied forces in Western Europe are prepared for a German invasion through the Benelux countries. The Japanese too are determined to continue their campaign in China, and send thousands more young men into the battlefields.

The situation in Norway looks grim for the Allied forces, and the Norwegians are steadily losing faith in the Allied capability to turn things around. And even though all is still quiet on the Western Front, the Allies have a plan ready to counter a German invasion of France and the Benelux countries. This episode is, again, very heavily filled with top notch maps and animations. These are all made by Eastory, who has a YouTube channel on his own as well! In April 1940 in Poland, if you are on the list of Nazi or Soviet non-desirables, there three options: run for your life, be shipped off to a camp, or face the execution squad… if you happen to be Jewish it’s likely to be the fourth option: the Ghetto.

Now… this is a tough episode. It’s also tough to illustrate with images. Many of the events we speak of were, for obvious reasons not documented at the time. As a result we have had to resort to using some imagery that is from later dates when similar events, or the aftereffects of these events were documented on film and photo. We have labeled these images as best we can when it is relevant. Last but not least… do please remember our rules, especially on an episode like this one. Respect the dead and never forget that the only way we can do them justice is to remember their loss and sacrifice.

QotD: Romania and the Nazi Final Solution

Last place goes to Romania, which had been anti-Semitic since the beginning of time and was genuinely excited to have Nazi orders as an excuse to carry out their own worse impulses:

In Rumania even the S.S. were taken aback, and occasionally frightened, by the horrors of old-fashioned, spontaneous pogroms on a gigantic scale; they often intervened to save Jews from sheer butchery, so that the killing could be done in what, according to them, was a civilized way.

The Romanians started their own concentration camps to supplement the Nazi’s, “more elaborate and atrocious affairs than anything we know of in Germany”, but they didn’t always need them – “deportation Rumanian style consisted in herding five thousand people into freight cars and letting them die there of suffocation while the train traveled through the countryside without plan or aim for days on end; a favorite followup to these killing operations was to expose the corpses in Jewish butcher shops.” Things became so bad that Nazi emissary Manfred von Killinger, intervened and asked them to stop and defer to German efforts. I feel like when a Nazi named Commander von Killinger is horrified by your brutality, it’s time to take a step back and evaluate whether you may have crossed a line.

Other interesting profiles include Greece (hopelessly depressing), Slovakia (very Catholic, in favor of killing Jews but got in a bunch of fights with the Nazis about ethnic Jews who had been baptized into Catholicism), Hungary (ruled by an Admiral despite being landlocked; otherwise hopelessly depressing), Belgium (deliberately left the trains unlocked so the Jews could escape!), Holland (kind of like France; the local Gentiles tried to help, but the assimilated Jews sold out the refugee Jews in the hope of placating the Nazis; the Nazis were not placated; three-quarters of Jews died), and Poland (I don’t even want to talk about how hopelessly depressing this one is).

QotD: France and the Nazi Final Solution

Filed under: Europe, France, Germany, History, Quotations, WW2 — Tags: , , — Nicholas @ 01:00

Less happy is the story of France. The Germans realized that the Vichy French were attached to assimilated French Jews, so they started by demanding only those foreign Jews who had come to France as refugees. There were a hundred thousand of these, and Marshal Petain of France said that they had “always been a problem” and he was glad to have “an opportunity to get rid of them” (in his defense, he was under the impression that Jews sent to Germany would be “resettled in the East”). After this had been going on for a while, Eichmann figured that the French were on his side, and asked for permission to take the native French Jews as well. The French, having sent tens of thousands of stateless Jews to the concentration camps, were suddenly outraged that the Nazis would dare lift a finger against French Jews, and shut down the entire deportation program. I am sure the French count this as a moral victory nowadays, though it’s a very selective sort of morality.

QotD: Surnames and taxes

… (related: Scott examined some of the same data about Holocaust survival rates as Eichmann In Jerusalem, but made them make a lot more sense: the greater the legibility of the state, the worse for the Jews. One reason Jewish survival in the Netherlands was so low was because the Netherlands had a very accurate census of how many Jews there were and where they lived; sometimes officials saved Jews by literally burning census records).

Centralized government projects promoting legibility have always been a two-steps-forward, one-step back sort of thing. The government very gradually expands its reach near the capital where its power is strongest, to peasants whom it knows will try to thwart it as soon as its back is turned, and then if its decrees survive it pushes outward toward the hinterlands.

Scott describes the spread of surnames. Peasants didn’t like permanent surnames. Their own system was quite reasonable for them: John the baker was John Baker, John the blacksmith was John Smith, John who lived under the hill was John Underhill, John who was really short was John Short. The same person might be John Smith and John Underhill in different contexts, where his status as a blacksmith or place of origin was more important.

But the government insisted on giving everyone a single permanent name, unique for the village, and tracking who was in the same family as whom. Resistance was intense:

What evidence we have suggests that second names of any kind became rare as distance from the state’s fiscal reach increased. Whereas one-third of the housholds in Florence declared a second name, the proportion dropped to one-fifth for secondary towns and to one-tenth in the countryside. It was not until the seventeenth century that family names crystallized in the most remote and poorest areas of Tuscany – the areas that would have had the least contact with officialdom. […]

State naming practices, like state mapping practices, were inevitably associated with taxes (labor, military service, grain, revenue) and hence aroused popular resistance. The great English peasant rising of 1381 (often called the Wat Tyler Rebellion) is attributed to an unprecedented decade of registration and assessments of poll taxes. For English as well as for Tuscan peasants, a census of all adult males could not but appear ominous, if not ruinous.

Outbreak of the War Against Humanity – WW2 – WaH 001 – 5 March 1940

World War Two
Published on 6 Mar 2019

When the Second World War breaks out, it is at first largely a war between one side of totalitarian aggressors against a portion of the democratic countries of the world defending other totalitarian states. From the first day of the war in Poland, as it already is in China, this will be a war against humanity.

READ THIS AND OUR RULES BEFORE COMMENTING Here it is with some slight delay – the first episode of War Against Humanity, written and hosted by Spartacus Olsson. Due to the delay, this video went public on YouTube and was not in Preview for the TimeGhost army – we apologise for this – the next WaH video will be given in advance. To be clear it is the support of the TimeGhost army that enables us to continuously expand and improve our coverage – if you haven’t already, consider signing up on timeghost.tv or https://www.patreon.com/TimeGhostHistory – Now, we have age-restricted this video of our own accord because of the extremely graphic content in some sections. While we are of the opinion that it should be available for anyone over the age of 15, YouTube does not offer us that possibility. We apologise to our viewers that are in that bracket, but we felt that it was more important to protect children from exposure to this kind of violence without the help of an adult to digest it.
