Japan’s immediate future seems decided with a new government that certainly has no issue with the war in China or with extending that war to the south, meanwhile Moscow panics as the Germans approach. What does all this mean for the men and women in the occupied territory? What does it mean for those at home?

The Wehrmacht is Not Clean! – War Against Humanity 020 – October 1941 Pt 1

World War Two

The Wehrmacht is deeply involved with the Nazis’ War Against Humanity. They are complicit in the murder of thousands of Jews in the “Holocaust of Bullets”, and the severe treatment of Soviet Prisoners of War. In October 1941, Wehrmacht General Walther von Reichenau issues the “Severity Order”, taking away any ambiguity there may be as to the Wehrmacht‘s vision.

World War Two
7 hours ago (edited)
Two years into the World War Two channel, we’re still often confronted with stubborn myths regarding the responsibility for the crimes committed against humanity during the Second World War. We have already seen time and time again how the Wehrmacht is actively and passively complicit to the harsh treatment of civilians, the mishandling and killing of PoWs, the murder of local non-combatants, and the genocides committed by Nazi Germany. Let this episode be nail in that myth’s coffin. There is, unambiguously and unequivocally, no doubt about the Wehrmacht‘s awareness, intentions, actions, effects and complicity in the War Against Humanity.

For our Polish speakers: while Spartacus’ less than perfect pronounciation of Polish names is usually at least an attempt, the pronounciation of Belzec is on pupose the English way of saying it, since the Polish pronounciation is not familiar to almost all non-Polish speakers, and it needs to be clear of what place he is speaking of.

The episode covers some of Otto Kretschmer’s 11 Points of Submarine Warfare. Here’s the full list:

1. Efficient lookouts are of prime importance.
2. It is essential not simply to spot the target, but to spot it in good time.
3. Lone ships should be attacked on the surface with gunfire in order to save expensive torpedoes.
4. Survivors should be assisted where possible.
5. Convoys should only be attacked in daylight if it is not feasible to wait for nightfall.
6. Attack at night from the dark side of the convoy, so that the target is silhouetted and the submarine is in shadow.
7. When there is little or no moonlight, attack from the windward side [to avoid a visible white bow-wave when motoring into the wind].
8. Fire one torpedo per target, not fanned salvoes.
9. Fire at close range.
10. Once the attack is launched, do not submerge except in circumstances of dire necessity. Remember that on the surface it is easier for you to spot the enemy than for the enemy to spot you.
11. Dive only for two hours before dawn each day, to rest the crew, sweep with the sound detection equipment, etc.; otherwise, remain on the surface.

No one should have to go through what the subjects of todays episode went through. Every one of the 33,000 victims of the mass-murder at Babi Yar has their own personal story. They were humans, just like you and me, with memories, interests, hobbies, fears, hopes and loved ones. This is why we tried to make this episode as personal as we could – So that we don’t forget that we’re talking about real people here.

America First – Patriots or Nazis? – WW2 Special

In 1941, the question of whether America should join the European War still isn’t settled. Different groups whip up opposition to it, and those such as the America First Committee seem suspiciously sympathetic to Hitler’s message and cause.

In former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Uzice breaks free from the German occupation, even as the Germans are mopping up the masses of shattered Soviet Armies after last week’s capture of Kiev. In the north, it really looks as if Leningrad will hold out for the time being, and German troops from both north and south converge on the center for the coming drive on Moscow.

In the first half of September, Nazi murder campaigns in Vilnius and the Pripet Marshes continue. In the rest of Europe, the Germans tighten their grip on the occupied countries, taking away media privileges and further restricting the freedoms of Jewish populations.

A new month and more carnage — we get the question about why so much about the Jews? Why only about the Eastern Front? Well, this is September 1941, many of the things that befell other ethnicities have not yet begun. When they do we will cover them. You’ll also see that some of this is “more of the same” — and in fact, sometimes it’s difficult for us to find a way to not let the tragedy that all this death really represents become trivial through the sheer size and repetition of the drama, yet we feel that it is important to keep it coming, week after week. Recent surveys in several countries show that a majority of people under 30 don’t know the full extent, or sometimes even the existence of the Holocaust. Using YouTube to document how it evolved, step by gruesome step is therefore in our opinion all the more important.

Whilst the fighting may be over, the Crisis certainly isn’t. For starters, the three invaders may have agreed to a ceasefire, but aren’t too keen to give up the land they’ve conquered. And even if this is resolved, what lies in wait for the humiliated ex-colonial powers? Ultimately, only one thing does seem certain — irreversible change.

So that’s the end of our series on the Suez Crisis. It’s been a pretty wild and messy ride, but we think our realtime format gave it a fresh perspective that hasn’t done before.

If you liked that final point Indy made about Churchill and The Beatles, and you want to find out more about decolonisation, then you should look up the work of Bill Schwarz. He was the one who originally made the comparison in his book White Man’s World, and it’s a really fascniating read, if also a bit challenging. Decolonisation is actually becoming a really vibrant field of study in academia and there are a whole host of books available if any of you want to dive into the topic. Europe After Empire by Elizabeth Buettner is an excellent place to start and Fight or Flight by Martin Thomas will be right up your street if you want to learn about the wars of decolonisation and the politics behind them. If you have any other suggestions then feel free to post them below.

Anyway, we hope you enjoyed the series and learnt a thing or two.
