Published 1 Jul 2022When it comes to wood finishes, for most, it is like watching paint dry, but we woodworkers must come up with something that makes our work look good, has durability, and is generally easy to apply. Over the years, I have tried most, and the two I lean on the most are shellac and water-based clear varnishes.
Chemicals as solvents used in paints have harmful effects, and we have become more conscious of the problems they cause. I wanted to let people know what I use in the day-to-day.
These two are the ones I rely on the most, but I do use other finishes from time to time.

Whether you need a quick fix to replace a kitchen drawer or a fine element to a precious furniture piece you are making, this dovetail is quick to make and needs no special equipment beyond a chisel, a mallet, a sharp knife, and a square.
That’s nine minutes to a twin dovetailed corner and a mere 36 minutes for a box or a drawer.

Published 2 Sep 2022This is the story about woodworking on YouTube and how it got started. The first year of YouTube was mostly about sharing videos with friends, family and even colleagues, and on December 13, 2005 John Leeke, @John Leeke a historic preservationist made history by posting the platform’s first woodworking video.
Frank Howarth @frank howarth would create the first woodworking channel on July 8, 2006, followed shortly after by Marc Spagnuolo @The Wood Whisperer on Oct 18, 2006 and Matthias Wandel @Matthias Wandel on Apr 9, 2007.
The recession in 2008 contributed to only a handful of new channels emerging over the next few years. Ones who are still posting today include Carl Jacobsen, Colin Knecht, Chad Stanton, WoodWorkers Guild Of America, Chop With Chris, myself, Ana White, Jon Peters, Alain Vaillancourt, Stumpy Nubs, Samurai Carpenter, John Heisz, and Paul Sellers.
In 2013, the flood gates opened, ushering in the Golden Age of YouTube woodworking and maker channels (2013-2017), followed by the Influencer Era and the COVID era.
If you’ve been a long time YouTube viewer, I hope you enjoy this nostalgic look at the early days and if you’re new to the platform, maybe you’ll check out some of this early content. A lot of it might seem rough by today’s standards, but it was content made by a few passionate people for the sheer joy of sharing videos about woodworking.

Published 14 Apr 2022Woodworking marks we use in the laying out process for joinery are usually made with pencils, knives, and marking gauges of different types, and those new to using hand tool methods might feel confused as to when to use what type during layout.
In this video, we show where and when to use temporary pencil lines in preparation for permanent marks with knives and marking gauges so that after the joinery is completed, all visible markings disappear with the completion of each joint.
