Essential Wood Finishes | Paul Sellers

When it comes to wood finishes, for most, it is like watching paint dry, but we woodworkers must come up with something that makes our work look good, has durability, and is generally easy to apply. Over the years, I have tried most, and the two I lean on the most are shellac and water-based clear varnishes.

Chemicals as solvents used in paints have harmful effects, and we have become more conscious of the problems they cause. I wanted to let people know what I use in the day-to-day.

These two are the ones I rely on the most, but I do use other finishes from time to time.

It’s a small project but not to be despised. Paul would start anyone new to woodworking with this simple and straightforward kitchen utensil simply because of some of the techniques you will use for many years to come.

Whether you later choose to make a kayak or a guitar neck, a three-legged stool, or a tool handle, everything taught in this wooden spatula, together with the tools, will be the same techniques.

It’s a win-win project, and Paul has used this with hundreds upon hundreds of his students through the years.

Woodworking marks we use in the laying out process for joinery are usually made with pencils, knives, and marking gauges of different types, and those new to using hand tool methods might feel confused as to when to use what type during layout.

In this video, we show where and when to use temporary pencil lines in preparation for permanent marks with knives and marking gauges so that after the joinery is completed, all visible markings disappear with the completion of each joint.

Using a combination of planes and techniques makes the highs low and brings the lows high. This system works like no other so enjoy a strategy that Paul has used for decades in straightening and squaring his wood ready for joinery.

Understanding Wood Grain | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 4 Mar 2022

Grain for most people is the look wood has in its diverse colour and configuration. For the woodworker, grain is the inner depth that must be worked with saws, chisels, and planes, and the understanding reinforces the way the wood must always be worked to work “with” the grain rather than against it.

Paul put this video together to help bridge the gap of information between the observer, who needs only to see and feel, and the maker, who must understand how the fibre of wood works like the material in their life.

There are different ways to make mortise and tenons secure and permanent, but few of them compare to the mechanical strength of the fox-tail or fox-wedged mortise and tenon joint.

Once seated to the shoulders, this joint will never come apart without breaking the mortise apart. We hope that you enjoy seeing exactly how this remarkable woodworking joint is made, but, more importantly, how and why it works so well.

The Paul Sellers Mortise Guide

Published 4 Feb 2022

Mortise guides were once an unknown aid in woodworking realms but they ensure parallelity to the outside face of any mortise you cut and increase your levels of accuracy to near perfection.

Paul invented this guide for woodworking students to improve their mortising work and saw thousands of them succeed in cutting perfect mortises but also found himself reaching for one daily too.

Make metric and imperial sets and customise them for specific jobs too.

The frog in the range of bench planes designed by Leonard Bailey for Stanley planes like the #4 smoother here can cause some confusion, but they really don’t do that much either. In this video, I show you what limits it and where it is best to set it to for daily use in planing encounters. It’s dead simple!

How to Adjust the Depth of a No.4 Plane | Paul Sellers

The depth adjustment could not be simpler once you have adjusted the lateral adjustment lever so that the blade cutting edge is parallel to the sole.

This adjustment determines the depth of cut for different thicknesses. I take this seriously when I make my adjustments and the more you practice, the more it will become second nature to you. This quick video will get you started and demystify this very efficient adjuster.

How to Make the World’s Best Router Plane | Episode 1

Published 29 Oct 2021

Can a homemade wooden router plane give you what an all-metal one gives you? It absolutely can!

There are detailed drawings and parts list available here: https://paulsellers.com/router-plane-…

Paul has wanted to answer the need for a low-cost hand router plane that does not, in any way, take second place to any of the established ones made by Stanley and Record in the last century. Neither does it compromise on the utility offered by any of the high-end expensive ones.

This episode is Paul’s answer to a worldwide problem of supply and demand and he guarantees that you will not only love making your own, fully adjustable router plane, but also owning one for a lifetime of work.

Can’t wait for Episode 2 to be released next week? You can watch it it here for free: https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/…

How to Adjust the Lateral Lever of a Bench Plane | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 18 Jun 2021

Starting out with a bench plane can be daunting and, especially is this so, if you don’t understand the mechanisms that work to adjust the settings.

In this case, I discuss how to use the lateral adjustment lever that enables you to set the cutting edge of the plane iron parallel to the face of the sole. This unique feature revolutionised the adjustability of alignment to make it quick and simple to do but, more than that, it allowed us to immediately compensate when we hone our plane irons out of square.
