Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

Published 15 Jun 2023

I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less.

The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine!

Watch the video and see what you feel.

When to use Bevel up or Bevel Down with a Chisel | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 23 Feb 2021

Bevel up or bevel down chisel work? This question comes up often because for some reason, mainly from school woodworking, kids are taught to remove waste from a housing dado, recess, or other using only the bevel down. In reality, however, we need to be ready to use both or one or the other at different times. I hope that this video will help to show alternative ways and also show just how very versatile the chisel is for various applications.

How to Sharpen a V Tool or Carving Gouge – Hand Tool Woodworking

Wood By Wright
Published 18 May 2017

What good is a carving chisel if it is not sharp? The V-tool and Carving gouge are easier to sharpen than they look if you understand a few basic Hand Tool truths. Any blade is sharpened the same way but some blades require the right tool to reach the tip. All woodworking is, is a sharp iron working its way through the wood. Here is how to do it!

Diamond Stones: http://amzn.to/2oppz0J (I use Extra-coarse, Medium-fine, and Extra-fine)

In this video, I’ll show you the quick, accurate way to cut a mortise. While it’s perfectly ok to do this with just a chisel and mallet, it’s quite often quicker to drill the waste out first. Especially on small, delicate components like this that won’t take repeated beating very well!

I can verify that the Narex and Stanley Sweetheart chisels are a good buy, and perhaps the best money-for-quality ratio you’ll find in non-vintage chisels (and if you know enough about the relative quality of long-gone vintage chisel brands, it’s unlikely you’ll be buying any of the tools he mentions in this video).

UPDATE

Watch your fingers on the sides of the chisel if you’re going for the pencil grip, they can sometimes be sharp. Firstly, this isn’t a bad thing; in fact its quite useful! Watch this video to see why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9S6r104pQk

But if you do find you are cutting yourself, try one of these three things:
1: Loosen your grip. No need for a death grip here. Hold it with the same pressure as you would with a pencil.
2: Run a bit of 400 grit sandpaper up the edge of the chisel ONCE. Don’t go back and forth with it, one stroke will be enough to take the edge off.
3: Keep in mind that every time you cut yourself the skin toughens up. So if all else fails, keep battling through it!
