Although we may picture panzers when we think of the German Army in WW2, it was very much an army that relied on horses — especially in the east — for a large part of its supplies and logistics, and the horse situation on the Eastern Front has grown dire. Japan’s economic situation has also grown dire and they are now looking south for new sources of raw materials.
What happened to Allied ambassadors? And how did Hitler react to the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact? And why didn’t he invade Sweden? Once again, Indy is in the Chair of Infinite Knowledge answering all your exciting questions about World War Two!
The planning for Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, took nearly a year and went through a variety of scenarios. The basic plan was finalized in December 1940, and that month General Friedrich Paulus ran a series of war games to test its feasibility. Today we’ll look at his conclusions.

When we recorded this the first time, we didn’t have the chance to release these day by day. It took us almost half a year from when we had the idea until the last episode came out. We still felt that it was a revelation to see it chronologically. For me as writer it was in any case a deep dive into a story that I thought I knew, but rediscovered by reassembling the source documents in the exact order things happened. I learnt new aspects and gained an incredibly more detailed understanding of both the events and the people involved. But today, on Sunday July 19, 2020 it is the fourteenth day that both Indy, Astrid and I watch the remade episodes completed as they are released every day, I haven’t even watched this last episode yet, and even though I know exactly what is going to happen, I’m excited. This is crazy, crazy stuff.
And now, the three of us are sitting in the garden in Bavaria preparing to shoot the next months shows. And when we look back and talk about it it we’re all so glad that we got the chance to make this even better. Astrid could go full out on the set, and do even more with Indy’s costume. We had fun adding drama with the light. Indy make the delivery even better by changing the tenses to the present and altering the script slightly so that it felt more immediate. But perhaps more than anything, we could get more, better archive, get our editors added touch, and rethink the music score so that it was more consistent and period appropriate.

On October 27, 1962 a deal to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis is ever so close, but then almost everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. The world is left teetering on the brink, and someone has to die.

Just when everything looks OK again, the house of cards that the USSR and USA have built starts to crumble. To us in 2020 that should serve to remind us that words matter. Because that’s all it was to begin with — words like “give it to the Reds!” and “down with the Bourgeoisie!” But words easily become bluster, and bluster easily becomes action, and action is always hard to control.

However hard it is to watch this horror, it’s important that we document it, and learn from it. Each and everyone of us can, and we must for the sake of ourselves and our fellow human beings do so. The steps that led the people involved in these atrocities to this point were small, sometimes innocent, or at least uninformed decisions that took many years to reach this level of inhumanity. It starts with denying facts, imagining conspiracies as the root of your own problems, and demonizing your imagined enemies. In this void you are already on a slippery slope that may lead into the abyss. On that note, the events depicted here are based on solid research, and verified sources that are irrefutable. Wherever there is uncertainty, we have mentioned it. The purpose of this documentation is neither to scapegoat any one side, nor exonerate anyone from blame. These are the facts. This is what happened. Think about that, because the perpetrators here were like us, they didn’t come out of their mother’s womb with the intent to torture and murder anyone. And the victims were also like all of us, ordinary people just trying to get on with their lives according to their best ability. They had dreams and goals in life, some of them political perhaps, but mostly they just got on with their everyday life, banal and difficult as that might be, until they ended up in the hands of someone who had learnt to hate them without even knowing them. Remember that – this could have been anyone of us, on both sides of the events. To have that humility is the beginning of a journey to do good.

PS. and if you wonder how we put up with making this kind of content; it’s difficult. I cried bitterly after recording this, and tears still well up when I think about it. While we write it’s easier to turn off, switch on the coping mechanisms, pretend that its just absurd facts and numbers. But when you act out the words… that what defies imagination is suddenly horribly real.

On October 22, in the world’s first televised announcement of an international military crisis, US President John F. Kennedy sets off panic and sudden fear of a third world war, with nuclear arms involved.
On October 21 1962, politicians and military in both the US and in the USSR seem to have contradictory views on what to do next. Should the Soviet local commanders on Cuba get to play with the little nukes as they like, or rather wait for permission?
Germany keeps advancing on the eastern front, and yet by now, transport and supply problems are seriously undermining the capability of the German spearheads, even as they pull further away from the infantry. The Syria-Lebanon campaign is coming to an end, though, and an armistice is proposed which would give the Allies victory if accepted.
