Under almost every video where I mention that the United Nations do this or do that, someone “corrects” me that the UN was only founded in 1945. In this episode I finally came to the moment when the wartime United Nations Alliance connects to the post-war United Nations. Because, for better or worse, they are the same thing — or at the least the present UN is an evolution of the alliance. While doing the research for this episode I was reminded of how many of my colleagues, like myself find ourselves scratching our heads when confronted with how forgotten, discarded, or perhaps revised the early history of the UN is.

In 1942, US President Roosevelt and GB Prime Minister Churchill started a deliberate, and quite extensive promotion campaign to cement the idea of an institution that would continue well beyond the war. The campaign didn’t end during all of the war years. It was also picked up by the other allies. In the first years after the war much was also made of the wartime origins of the UN, but then it fizzled out. Already by the 1950s, less than decade after the war, the strong, linear connection between what was by then known as “the Allies” and the UN had more or less been forgotten. I can imagine a whole slew of reasons for that, but I have neither made, nor seen any full academic analysis of the reasons. What’s your opinion, why did we choose to collectively forget that the UN was originally the alliance that defeated the evils of the Axis powers?
