The Bulgarian defenses in the Lake Doiran region were pretty much the best defenses any country had anywhere in the Great War, which the Entente forces discovered as they tried time and again and failed time and again — to break the front.

The fighting on the Macedonian Front is often overlooked when one thinks of the Great War, and it was even scoffed at by some at the time, who called the Entente Army of the Orient the “Gardeners of Salonika”, but it was of great importance, defended brilliantly by the Bulgarians, and its collapse heralded the end of the war.

What else do you think is overlooked about the Great War that deserves more focus?
