How to use a Shooting Board | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 11 Dec 2020

If you have never used a shooting board for squaring up the ends of wood and finalising rough-cut mitres, you are in for a treat.

Nothing works so beautifully for perfecting such cuts, and the pure bliss of slicing off those onion skins to seat the two faces perfectly is second to none. It’s self-explanatory to make one of these, but showing it in use demystifies how they work and why they work so very well. You must make one for yourself. It’s another lifetime piece of equipment for the cost of wood scraps and an hour of your time!

How to Layout Dovetails with Equal Pins | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 27 Nov 2020

Dividing for dovetails using an angled line makes it easier to layout for equally sized dovetails but the standard method used leaves half pins on the outside edges. In some projects, this can be a weak point.

This video shows you how to layout for equally sized dovetails and pins. In this case, the board is 5 1/4″ (133.35mm), and we want five 1/2″ (12.7mm) pins and four dovetails but this system can be adapted to any variation of numbers and pins sizes.

Making seed trays is a simple enough project, but Paul wants to introduce you to two methods that he uses for his own, and you can choose which you might prefer or make two or more using these methods.

They take a matter of minutes to make and are great to make with children too. Paul has included methods that guarantee a successful outcome and then to longevity that puts disposable plastic where it rightly belongs, and that is away from us woodworkers.

How to make a Saw Clamp | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 5 May 2020

It’s the small things that make our lives run smoothly, and making this saw clamp for saw sharpening guarantees vibration-free saw sharpening for life.

What’s not to like about a utility piece you made yourself from scrap without turning a single machine on too? Make one of these and you’ll be telling your grandkids that you made it 50 years ago and that you’ve been using it throughout your woodworking life!

We just thought we would let you know that Paul filmed this video (and a few more upcoming videos) by himself in the studio, and they were edited remotely by Natalie.

Our team has spent the last month or so working nearly entirely from home, which leaves the garage/studio free for Paul to use without increasing anybody’s risk from the virus.

Paul wanted to create some specific projects that could be made from scraps of wood using simple tools in order to encourage you all to make things at home if you can.

We think that Paul and the rest of the team have done remarkably well to create something uniquely tailored to the current circumstances, and we hope you enjoy this and the other upcoming videos.
