How to Carve a Star | Paul Sellers

I have been asked to create this video for some time but couldn’t get to it. Here it is.

All you need is a good sharp chisel. This chisel is an Aldi, £2.50 version, so nothing special. The steps I show guarantee a positive outcome, but please be prepared to put in some practice on a scrap of wood. Avoid softwoods because they have hard and soft aspects surrounding the growth rings which are sometimes difficult to work with. I’m using cherry, but there are many choices that have consistent grain, such as poplar, oak, and walnut.

Carving this star took me a little over half an hour to do. With practice, you will get to understand the grain of the wood, direction and the chiselling techniques I used. I hope you enjoy creating your star!

Exploring Hand Tool Woodworking | Paul Sellers

Most of the woodworkers I come to meet have lost any working knowledge of just how efficient and effective hand tools are in daily woodworking, and yet I have used them to make my living for 60 years. Not only have they lost the skills and knowledge, but they have lost belief in themselves and the ability to use them.

With our team, I have spent three decades training hundreds of thousands of woodworkers worldwide to use the methods I was raised with as an apprentice, and they are discovering that hand tools are not outdated or outmoded.

Watch this video and ask yourselves, if you couldn’t use tools just like these in your day-to-day woodworking.

Refining the cove with a gouge and then scraping it and sanding it prepares us to fit the cove to the timepiece.

In this episode, Paul walks you through mitering the cove by hand using a poor man’s mitre guide and a block plane to trim and fit the mitres freehand.

We walk you through using CA (superglue) to attach the coved pieces securely and permanently in place.

Once done, we can apply our choice of finish. Three to four coats are usually enough after sanding the first to take away any raised grain.

3 Chisel Mortise Method | Paul Sellers

Sometimes, we avoid simple joinery because we believe it cannot be done well, and efficiently by hand. This mortise, 4″ long and 1 1/2″ deep by half an inch, took me around seven minutes.

In any hardwood, oak, for instance, it might take a minute longer, but no more. I did this video to show a technique using my mortise guide and a strategic way using three standard chisels and a method.

I am making a bed with eight mortise and tenon joints, and the mortise I chopped here is one of them.

Enjoy real woodworking with me; it doesn’t always need to be called work!

Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

Published 15 Jun 2023

I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less.

The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine!

Watch the video and see what you feel.

When to use Bevel up or Bevel Down with a Chisel | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 23 Feb 2021

Bevel up or bevel down chisel work? This question comes up often because for some reason, mainly from school woodworking, kids are taught to remove waste from a housing dado, recess, or other using only the bevel down. In reality, however, we need to be ready to use both or one or the other at different times. I hope that this video will help to show alternative ways and also show just how very versatile the chisel is for various applications.

How to Sharpen a V Tool or Carving Gouge – Hand Tool Woodworking

Wood By Wright

What good is a carving chisel if it is not sharp? The V-tool and Carving gouge are easier to sharpen than they look if you understand a few basic Hand Tool truths. Any blade is sharpened the same way but some blades require the right tool to reach the tip. All woodworking is, is a sharp iron working its way through the wood. Here is how to do it!

In this video, I’ll show you the quick, accurate way to cut a mortise. While it’s perfectly ok to do this with just a chisel and mallet, it’s quite often quicker to drill the waste out first. Especially on small, delicate components like this that won’t take repeated beating very well!

My name is Matt Estlea, I’m a 24 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.

I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation. I now teach City and Guilds Furniture Making at Rycotewood as of September 2018.

If you’re interested in studying at Rycotewood, view their courses here:
www.mattestlea.com/rycotewood

I also had 5 years of experience working at Axminster Tools and Machinery where I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this at the start of 2019 to focus solely on video creation and teaching.

During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite ‘Tool Duel’ where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.

Lets go make a mess.
