Being the creator of the legendary Sherlock Holmes has made Arthur Conan Doyle famous for his scientific rationality. But Doyle also has a deeply held belief in the existence of the spirit universe. In a world still reeling from the shock of the Great War, he is not alone.

As this episode hopefully makes clear, it’s important to understand the spiritualist convictions of someone like Arthur Conan Doyle on his own terms. He saw no contradiction between his rationality and spiritualism and nor did a whole host of people who had become believers in the wake of the Great War.

A good way to understand someone on their own terms is to go straight to the source, and luckily, all of Doyle’s books are free to view online. You can check out his infamous The Coming of the Fairies here: https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/The_Coming_of_the_Fairies. Even just the pictures themselves are very interesting.
