Paul Sellers
Published 29 Oct 2021Can a homemade wooden router plane give you what an all-metal one gives you? It absolutely can!
There are detailed drawings and parts list available here: https://paulsellers.com/router-plane-…
Paul has wanted to answer the need for a low-cost hand router plane that does not, in any way, take second place to any of the established ones made by Stanley and Record in the last century. Neither does it compromise on the utility offered by any of the high-end expensive ones.
This episode is Paul’s answer to a worldwide problem of supply and demand and he guarantees that you will not only love making your own, fully adjustable router plane, but also owning one for a lifetime of work.
Can’t wait for Episode 2 to be released next week? You can watch it it here for free: https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/…

Personally, I far prefer using a hand plane or a scraper to sanding, as I find the noise and dust get hard to cope with fairly quickly, so most of my projects get the absolute minimum level of sanding.

How to Adjust the Lateral Lever of a Bench Plane | Paul Sellers
Paul Sellers
Published 18 Jun 2021Starting out with a bench plane can be daunting and, especially is this so, if you don’t understand the mechanisms that work to adjust the settings.
In this case, I discuss how to use the lateral adjustment lever that enables you to set the cutting edge of the plane iron parallel to the face of the sole. This unique feature revolutionised the adjustability of alignment to make it quick and simple to do but, more than that, it allowed us to immediately compensate when we hone our plane irons out of square.

How to Set a Cap Iron | Paul Sellers
Paul Sellers
Published 22 Apr 2021You can 20 expert woodworkers about what distance to set the cap iron (chip-breaker in the USA) fore-edge to the cutting edge and get 20 different suggestions. Why? Because generally speaking, it is undefined. I personally find that 1/32″ (1mm) works well but watch this video and you will see that you can set it anywhere between 1/32″ and 1/8″ and it will still cut nicely. Myth and mysteries often have no real substance to them so, this is done to bust them.

Why not to use a Block Plane | Paul Sellers
Paul Sellers
Published 22 Jan 2021Thinking of buying a block plane? Watch this first!
I have owned a block plane for all of my woodworking years, that’s 56 years to date, but I have to say that this plane is a plane I might pull out from the shelf once or twice a month. The thing to remember is that most of the time it will not do what you think it should do and it has very little value as a first plane.
Add it if you think you might have a need of it but don’t buy it because you think it’s cute. It’s probably the last in the list of planes I would buy.

How to use a Shooting Board | Paul Sellers
Paul Sellers
Published 11 Dec 2020If you have never used a shooting board for squaring up the ends of wood and finalising rough-cut mitres, you are in for a treat.
Nothing works so beautifully for perfecting such cuts, and the pure bliss of slicing off those onion skins to seat the two faces perfectly is second to none. It’s self-explanatory to make one of these, but showing it in use demystifies how they work and why they work so very well. You must make one for yourself. It’s another lifetime piece of equipment for the cost of wood scraps and an hour of your time!
