Tools in this video (Affiliate):

Chinese Jack Plane: https://amzn.to/3vtWCUh
This one is my favorite. It’s made of a very hard wood and the handle is high and easy to grip. The one in this video is the 280mm model and I set it up for aggressive work.

Chinese Smoothing Plane: https://amzn.to/37GJxOk
This one is the same length as the one above, and it has a lower handle and the wood is a bit softer. Still a fine plane for the money. The only reason I call this my “smoothing” plane is that I set it up for fine work. A shorter plane would probably make an even better smoother.

Japanese Ryoba Saw: https://amzn.to/3kfcCD5
Many Ryobas are very good. This is my favorite of the 4-5 I’ve tried.

The frog in the range of bench planes designed by Leonard Bailey for Stanley planes like the #4 smoother here can cause some confusion, but they really don’t do that much either. In this video, I show you what limits it and where it is best to set it to for daily use in planing encounters. It’s dead simple!

How to Adjust the Depth of a No.4 Plane | Paul Sellers

Published 16 Jul 2021

The depth adjustment could not be simpler once you have adjusted the lateral adjustment lever so that the blade cutting edge is parallel to the sole.

This adjustment determines the depth of cut for different thicknesses. I take this seriously when I make my adjustments and the more you practice, the more it will become second nature to you. This quick video will get you started and demystify this very efficient adjuster.

How to Make the World’s Best Router Plane | Episode 1

Published 29 Oct 2021

Can a homemade wooden router plane give you what an all-metal one gives you? It absolutely can!

There are detailed drawings and parts list available here: https://paulsellers.com/router-plane-…

Paul has wanted to answer the need for a low-cost hand router plane that does not, in any way, take second place to any of the established ones made by Stanley and Record in the last century. Neither does it compromise on the utility offered by any of the high-end expensive ones.

This episode is Paul’s answer to a worldwide problem of supply and demand and he guarantees that you will not only love making your own, fully adjustable router plane, but also owning one for a lifetime of work.

Can’t wait for Episode 2 to be released next week? You can watch it it here for free: https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/…

Personally, I far prefer using a hand plane or a scraper to sanding, as I find the noise and dust get hard to cope with fairly quickly, so most of my projects get the absolute minimum level of sanding.

How to Adjust the Lateral Lever of a Bench Plane | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 18 Jun 2021

Starting out with a bench plane can be daunting and, especially is this so, if you don’t understand the mechanisms that work to adjust the settings.

In this case, I discuss how to use the lateral adjustment lever that enables you to set the cutting edge of the plane iron parallel to the face of the sole. This unique feature revolutionised the adjustability of alignment to make it quick and simple to do but, more than that, it allowed us to immediately compensate when we hone our plane irons out of square.

How to Set a Cap Iron | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 22 Apr 2021

You can 20 expert woodworkers about what distance to set the cap iron (chip-breaker in the USA) fore-edge to the cutting edge and get 20 different suggestions. Why? Because generally speaking, it is undefined. I personally find that 1/32″ (1mm) works well but watch this video and you will see that you can set it anywhere between 1/32″ and 1/8″ and it will still cut nicely. Myth and mysteries often have no real substance to them so, this is done to bust them.
