How to chose the correct hand plane for the job is a question I get all the time. Also, what is up with the Stanley numbers. I thought this would be a good chance to touch on both questions.

Episode 4 will be released on YouTube on Friday 28th February.

Fitting the lid to the body of the box and marrying the surfaces results in a lid that fits properly in every way. But then there is the hinging, combined with the fielding that elevates the standard too.

All of that means that the main quality of the other features are equal in every way. For the inside divider, between the top bin and the drawer beneath, Paul takes you, step by step, through a very simple method for precise fitting.

Brace & Bit | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 14 Nov 2019

Paul has enjoyed using the traditional brace with a variety of different interchangeable bits for over 50 years and they work exceptionally well in a wide range of situations.

Many times we reach for electric drills and battery-driven drill drivers that can seem easy, but at the same time might well endanger the workpiece. Other times we have larger holes to drill that can cause strain to the drill and to the workpiece, whereas the brace and bit might well be the perfect solution. In Paul’s world it’s not an either-or, but a place for both.

Paul Sellers’ Desktop Organiser | Episode 2

Paul Sellers
Published 31 Jan 2020

Episode 3 will be released on YouTube on Friday 14th February.

Throughout this project, Paul emphasizes the methods of exactness to get the best results. Accuracy in planing leads to leveling the surfaces and especially those adjacent to one another. From surface planing to round overs and then gluing on the bottom board, there is no compromise.

This is the first time Paul has taught how to establish a fielded surface to a panel or lid via video and there are several techniques he uses in this small organiser that he hasn’t used elsewhere in his video output. Watching the technique in video with a thorough explanation alongside will be very instructional. Enjoy!

Published 17 Jan 2020

Our Desktop Organiser series was originally released for free on Woodworking Masterclasses, to see Episode 2 straight away click here: https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/…

Episode 2 will be released on YouTube on Friday 31st January.

Making smaller projects like this one can elevate the demand for precise handwork and the constant throughout this opening video is to establish accuracy first off.

Though this box is similar to one made in Paul’s foundational woodworking course, the design progresses to include all the tenets of drawer making and fitting. The box must be made to exacting tolerances, so Paul takes you one step at a time to show how he works to that end. You can choose any wood you like or have to hand, from Pine to Sapele and Oak to Spruce. If you are new to woodworking, you might prefer to practice some of the steps before you begin the whole box.
