Planing & Scraping Awkward Grain | Paul Sellers

I try not to be purposely controversial, but often, the wood demands a completely different tactic when it comes to truing and prepping for further steps like panel making and joinery.

Whereas some will say use this bevel-up or that bevel-down plane, use a York pitch, or whatever, the combination of methods and the addition of a #80 cabinet scraper will get you where you need to be, in very short order, but it might just defy convention.

I show you how to tame some very awkward sycamore in this video.

How to Make a Shaker Candle Box | Episode 2

With the dovetails all fitting, we are ready to clean up the inside faces of the box, ready for gluing the corners together. It’s a systematic process that minimises the risk of messing up.

Lots of tricks of the trade for gluing up and checking the whole for squareness, etc. Planing out any unevenness ensures a pristine finish, and we definitely follow a process that gives top-notch results.

The lid and bottom of the box are both rounded over, and the simplest thing is that we only need one tool, the #4 plane, to achieve amazing results. The final stage is to glue the bottom onto the box and prepare the lid for hingeing.

Make a Router Plane FAST with this affordable kit // The Compass Rose Router

More about the Router Plane Kit:

The Compass Rose Router Plane Kit is your fastest and most affordable path to a quality hand router. Long before Stanley invented the metallic router plane, artisans made their own routers from wood. These shop-made tools were effective and affordable for working craftspeople. Now, Compass Rose Toolworks is reinventing the wooden hand router. Our Router Plane has an extra-large hardwood body contoured for comfort. Instead of a tricky mortise and wedge, our blades are secured with a large brass thumb-screw. Our kit includes two blades in ½” and ¼” (13mm/6mm) widths as well as a pair of threaded inserts and an installation tool. The build is straightforward and can be completed in a single afternoon (plus time for the glue to dry.) We want you to be successful in this build, so we’ve also created a FREE assembly guide and a complete video tutorial on the build. These materials are available to anyone, even if you haven’t bought the kit yet.

Each kit includes:
– American ash body in two pieces for easy assembly.
– Two Cr-V blades, heat treated and ground, ready for final honing.
– Solid brass thumb-screw with 2 inserts, so you’ve got a backup.
– Insert installation tool (steel bolt and 2 nuts).
– Instant access to the PDF assembly guide and video tutorial.

Hand Planing Awkward Grain | Paul Sellers

Published 21 Oct 2022

We are often taught to plane in one direction or the other, planing along the grain, but some grain is better planed across the long axis to counter reverse grain caused by the roots of knots in the wood. This goes against the grain with many woodworkers, and yet it can be a perfect solution to get a really good surface.

I am not saying it works every time but more often than you might think; it puts you in the driving seat when wood seems to defy conventional means of planing.

Tools in this video (Affiliate):

Chinese Jack Plane: https://amzn.to/3vtWCUh
This one is my favorite. It’s made of a very hard wood and the handle is high and easy to grip. The one in this video is the 280mm model and I set it up for aggressive work.

Chinese Smoothing Plane: https://amzn.to/37GJxOk
This one is the same length as the one above, and it has a lower handle and the wood is a bit softer. Still a fine plane for the money. The only reason I call this my “smoothing” plane is that I set it up for fine work. A shorter plane would probably make an even better smoother.

Japanese Ryoba Saw: https://amzn.to/3kfcCD5
Many Ryobas are very good. This is my favorite of the 4-5 I’ve tried.

How to Adjust the Depth of a No.4 Plane | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 16 Jul 2021

The depth adjustment could not be simpler once you have adjusted the lateral adjustment lever so that the blade cutting edge is parallel to the sole.

This adjustment determines the depth of cut for different thicknesses. I take this seriously when I make my adjustments and the more you practice, the more it will become second nature to you. This quick video will get you started and demystify this very efficient adjuster.
