How to Sharpen a Gouge | Paul Sellers

Paul Sellers
Published 13 Mar 2017

Paul shows how to sharpen a gouge using his standard method, rocking the gouge side to side. He uses flat stones, in this case diamond stones in coarse (250), fine (600) and super fine (1200) grit, followed by a strop charged with buffing compound. Then you’re ready for carving.

For a beginner friendly guide on sharpening a gouge, see our sister site: https://commonwoodworking.com/sharpen…

NOTE: While I call this a drawer, it is really just a box that slides into the opening of the workstation. I placed the “tails” on the end pieces because they look better when the box is inside the opening. HOWEVER- if this were a drawer with a pull on the front, such as in a cabinet or other piece of furniture, the tails would go on the SIDE pieces, not the front and back pieces. This is because a drawer with a pull on the front puts all the opening/closing stress on that front panel. The drawer is stronger with the pins on the front and tails on the sides. I should have made this more clear in the video.
