Published 18 Jul 2023Hungary’s Jews are facing a Holocaust machine in overdrive. The deportation trains are arriving in such volume that even the extermination factory of Auschwitz can barely keep up with the pace. The entire country swiftly becomes Judenfrei and the Jews of Budapest sit helplessly as Adolf Eichmann and his Hungarian collaborators tighten the noose around them. Admiral Miklós Horthy is one of the few who can save them, but so far he has done nothing. Will that change?

In 1953, in Israel, Kasztner’s wartime actions in Hungary will resurface. He will be accused of collaboration with the Nazis and of having “sold his sold to the devil”. The core of the accusation is that in return for negotiating with the SS and saving a relatively small number of Jews, he facilitated the mass murder of many more. Kasztner will become so hated among sections of Israel’s population that he will be assassinated in 1957. How can we judge Kasztner’s actions now, with the benefit of our historical vantage point? However you view it, the Kasztner affair surely demonstrates that the past is never settled, it is continually refought in the present.
