We often see comments “pointing out” that “the British invented the concentration camp during the Second Boer War”. This is wrong on a lot of levels. The term itself originates from the Spanish-Cuban ten years war, but more importantly the idea of interning wartime prisoners in inhumane camps is as old as, well, war itself.
What is important is how the term is understood today by contemporary people, and that is much more clear. It references an industrialized network of intentionally deadly prison camps, mostly those of the 20th century, and especially those established by Nazi Germany in order to systematically murder people in pursuit of their ideological aims.
