World War Two
Published 25 Sep 2021Franz Halder, German Army Chief of Staff since the war began, loses his job this week, but the offensive this summer has failed to gain any of its objectives and someone has to take the blame. In the Caucasus it’s slowing to a crawl, and in Stalingrad the fighting is now block by block. Meanwhile, the Japanese are making new plans for a big offensive of their own, to take Guadalcanal once and for all.

World War Two

Depending how you look at it on a map, you would be forgiven for thinking that Hitler and his generals have been resoundingly successful in this war. They have after all captured a swath of territory from the Soviets that is three times the size of France. When you really look at it though, this war is not going very well at all. The Soviets are stronger than ever, and while the amount of territory captured by the German forces is indeed huge, it falls far short of the objectives they hoped to meet just last year. Looking at an actual map of the USSR, there is still an enormous amount of territory left to fight over.So now Hitler has fired all his top military officers. Given all the failures so far, and given that the generals are responsible for many of them, is Hitler making the right military strategic decision? Let us know.
