The comparatively mundane truth is that the symbol is a combination of the Norse runes for H and T – the bowyer’s initials.

When I worked in New Jersey (one of USA’s original 13 states), I remember my good friend (son of John & Carol) David Prickett had a black willow [long] bow. At 6’8″ (~2m), I asked if I may “give it a draw.” He said, “No.” w/explanation. All was good. Only years later did he hand me that black willow (in the field-range) to demonstrate to his daughter (as well as my kids) how to ‘address the target’ … and so I did.
