The godson of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, Paul Linebarger led an exciting life of unusual achievements well before he got into writing science fiction — including setting up one of the United States’ first psychological warfare units. Under his pen name, he wrote the trend-bucking work Scanners Live in Vain.

  1. I became a major fan of “Smith” in the 1960’s. His writings are both far-sighted and deeply moving. Still reads well today.

  2. I read a number of his short stories when I was about 12. “The Crime and Glory of Commander Suzdal” stuck with me, even though I haven’t revisited the story in over 40 years. That is staying power for a short story!

  3. Adding to the previous comment, I first read his short stories. The first story of any kind that I ever read that brought tears to my eyes was “A Planet Called Shayol”.

My favorites remain the trilogy “The Boy Who Bought Earth”. These can be re-read many times and still remain fresh and interesting.
