Is it just me, or are Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, and White Christmas three of the most depressing songs of all time?
Few people know the parenthetical parts of the song titles:
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (While I Starve To Death in a Japanese POW Camp
I’ll Be Home For Christmas (In a Box)
White Christmas (At Home, But Blood Red and Gangrene Green For Us On The Front)
Listening to my parents’ early-1960s-era recordings of these songs used to creep me out. As a young child, I had no idea why. When I came to realise the context in which these songs became popular, I had my answer.
