  1. An Excellent demonstration.
Not for the light of wallet though.
A good veritas bench plane is $260.00 CDN. Three diamond bench stones are between $315.00 and $450.00 CDN.

  2. Sharpening is one of those areas of modern woodworking that seems to get more and more complex … even though the basic task hasn’t changed in thousands of years. I don’t have the diamond stones, but I’ve got a set of waterstones that I don’t use as often as I should. Unlike Mr. Sellers’ demonstration, I usually find I spend more time setting up and trying to sharpen the blade than I do actually using the blasted thing. And, of course, because I don’t do a great job of sharpening in the first place, I quickly find that the blade is too dull, which means I need to pretend to sharpen again. All of which encourages me to turn on a power tool instead.

With all the special jigs, and water or oil stones, and diamond plates, and grinder attachments, and polishing compounds, and goodness knows what else, “sharpening” can easily amount to a separate “hobby” all by itself (if you believe what the manufacturers and retailers say, anyway).
