Just trying out an iPhone app that allows posting to the blog remotely.
If things work as expected, there should be a photo of some light summer reading below:
Update: Yep, looks like it worked. And yes, Herodotus is next on my reading list after the latest Theodore Dalrymple.
Herodotus, eh? Looks like I’ll have to brush up on my 300 memes for future discussions.
I’ve often thought it would be interesting to tell the story of the Persian Wars from the point of view of the goats in the region. Greeks, Persians… the poor critters had it coming at them from both ends.
Imagine the dialog:
Goat One: “The Persians are coming! The Persians are coming!”
Goat Two: “Funny you should put it that way.”
Picture the movie version as a mash-up of 300, Watership Down, and Deep Goat.

I liked the Landmark Thucidides by the same editor, so this was an easy choice to pick up. Even with all the additional information provided by the plentiful maps, gloss column beside the translated text, extensive notes and appendices, I have to admit I found the book heavy going. I think I have a mental “stutter” when I try to read certain common Greek words . . . it seems to take me twice as long to read a passage translated from the Greek than one translated from any other language (except German . . . that needs to be re-parsed in reverse!)
