I came down with something yesterday morning (not Swine Flu H1N1) that knocked me off my feet for the last 24 hours or so. Feeling much better now, but still backlogged with things I should have gotten done yesterday.

Sorry for the reduced rate of posting

Jamie Holts, call your office
I’m getting comments posted on the last item at a rate of about one per minute (32 at time of writing). This would be great, except they’re all coming from the same IP address, and they’re looking more and more like spam.
They’re getting repetitive . . . and rather contradictory:
- At 1:01pm — Thanks for posting the article, was certainly a great read!
- At 1:02pm — I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
- At 1:03pm — I like your site and wanted to know if you would be interested in exchanging blogroll links.
- At 1:04pm — I must say this is a great article i enjoyed reading it keep the good work 🙂
- At 1:06pm — I’m just getting started with my new blog. Would you want to exchange links on our blog-rolls?
- At 1:12pm — Can you tell me who did your layout? I’ve been looking for one kind of like yours. Thank you.
- At 1:14pm — Great post. I will read your posts frequently. Added you to the RSS reader.
- At 1:20pm — I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
- At 1:26pm — I discovered your homepage by coincidence.
Very interesting posts and well written.
I will put your site on my blogroll.
🙂- At 1:27pm — I’ve been reading along for a while now. I just wanted to drop you a comment to say keep up the good work.
- At 1:30pm — A friend of mine just emailed me one of your articles from a while back. I read that one a few more. Really enjoy your blog. Thanks
And so on . . .
I’m just letting them accumulate in the spam filter for the moment, but on the off-chance that there really is a “Jamie Holts” . . . you might want to check your machine.

Site admin
I’ve just updated to the latest version of WordPress . . . there may be a few stylesheet glitches until I notice ’em and fix ’em. Apologies if this causes any display issues for you.
If you do spot something, please let me know.

Admin update
Sorry for the broken page display over the last half hour or so . . . I’d miscoded a URL and it broke the sidebar template, so that the sidebar appeared in place of the main blog body at the point of the error. I think it’s fixed now.

Technology . . . can’t live without it . . . but . . .
After getting home from Pittsburgh yesterday, I discovered that my desktop computer has developed a problem while I was away. It no longer thinks it has a DVD writer or a second hard drive, and takes forever to boot.
I tried checking the physical connections between the two drives and the motherboard, and between the drives and the power supply, but they seem to be solid. This means the desktop is headed into the shop this afternoon. Drat!

On the road again
Just about to depart scenic downtown Mars, PA, so posting will be very light today. As always, do visit the folks on the blogroll, because there’s always interesting and informative stuff being posted on those sites.

Light posting today
The company that is hosting the training session I’m attending this week has restricted internet access so I’m not able to reach lots of sites I normally visit. Among those sites are my personal webmail interface, Twitter, and Gmail. Oddly, I can still access the blog dashboard (although that may not be true later in the week).
As a result, I’m very limited on the opportunities to find stories to blog about. As always, in times like this, if you’re looking for interesting blogging, I encourage you to visit the sites in the blogroll off to your right.

On the road again . . .
. . . in transit to just outside Pittsburgh, PA. If I can manage to reconnect when I arrive, blogging may resume. If not, it’ll have to wait until I return.
It’s been 19 years since I last visited Pittsburgh . . . I wonder if it’s improved since then. 1990 wasn’t a good year in the area, as most of the heavy industry had closed down, but nothing had moved in to replace it yet.
Update: Just arrived in the delightfully named “Cranberry, PA”. This particular area is looking much better than the last time I was in the area. I haven’t been into Pittsburgh proper yet.

Sorry for the downtime this morning
My new host had some problems with the database connections this morning, resulting in a loss of access to the blog (both for you and for me . . . I couldn’t get access on the admin side either). Service appears to be back to normal now.
If you didn’t notice a problem, feel free to ignore this post.

Yesterday’s menu: random thunderstorms
I did mean to update the blog yesterday, but the pattern of thunderstorms coming through the area intersected perfectly with other activities, so that I didn’t get the chance.
Right after dinner, I sat down to watch the first NFL preseason game between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans. Just after the introduction of the Hall of Fame inductees for this year, the power went out. It came back on again a few minutes later, so I got to see the most amusing fake-punt by the Titans, and a couple of first-down passes to T.O., and the power went out again.
This time, the power was out for about three hours. Much donder und blitzen, with lots of horizontal strikes of lightning, which was visually quite stunning.

Further adventures with CSS
I had to install a security update to WordPress yesterday. Remembering the last time this happened, I took a full backup of the site before running the install.
This time, I carefully downloaded the backup to my home machine, just to be sure. After running the installation (which, just like last time, blew away all my CSS modifications), I opened the backup, navigated to the location of my modified CSS file, and then hit a wall. I can see the file in the backup, but I can’t open or extract it. It’s rather frustrating . . .
So, once again, expect minor format tweaks as I try to reconstruct the last set of changes.
Update: Thanks to Jon, my former virtual landlord, the CSS and PHP modifications are back in place. If you notice anything still not working as expected, drop a comment on this post, please.

Anyone fluent in PHP?
Since I have to mess around with CSS again today (very much not my favourite use of time), I was also hoping to fix another problem.
Does anyone know what the PHP equivalent to this kind of HTML snippet would be?
<p> <a href="url" target="_blank"> <img src="url" alt="string" width="x" height="y" /> </a> </p>
I think it’s what I needed to do to fix the irritating text artifact that appeared in the banner (pre-CSS overwrite, of course)
Update: Aaaaaaaand . . . it’s back. Drat.

Mr Murphy checks in early
Y’know . . . I should have remembered that being careful isn’t always enough. There’s a new build of WordPress available, and I thought I should update to it.
But first, I cleverly backed up my files . . . I’ve been burned in the past by updates that stomp over things you wanted to keep.
Download and installed the update. Cool. Installed cleanly: great.
Except that it wiped out my style.css file. No biggie . . . I’ve got a fresh backup, so I can just . . . oh. Crap. The backup is incomplete and doesn’t include style.css.
Back to the drawing board. Tomorrow.
I’ll probably just do more damage if I try to reconstruct it tonight.

Testing the WordPress iPhone utility
Just trying out an iPhone app that allows posting to the blog remotely.
If things work as expected, there should be a photo of some light summer reading below:
Update: Yep, looks like it worked. And yes, Herodotus is next on my reading list after the latest Theodore Dalrymple.

Still working on the fiddly details
Not quite live here yet, which is why I’m cross-posting most items between the old blog (hosted at bolditalic.com) and this one. If you’ve just stumbled upon the site, feel free to also check out the old blog at http://www.bolditalic.com/quotulatiousness/ for several years of banality.
