QotD: Literally every Republican presidential candidate (so far)

Every 4 years the GOP nominee is literally Hitler. A few years later — sometimes, as in Mitt Romney’s case, as few as 4 years after he was accused of giving a woman cancer — that formerly-Hitler nominee becomes the standard of once-great GOP nominees to which the current nominee fall short.

  1. Neither Romney nor McCain nor Bob Dole were called Hitler. This is just too cute.

  2. Well, there’s this Bill Maher clip from 2012. In 2008, Madonna made the comparison for McCain. Both of those links were in the first page of results on Google (along with the obligatory videos with Hitler reacting to the candidates, and lots of images of the candidates with Hitler mustaches photoshopped on). There’s no point in running a search for Bush, is there? Bob Dole does not appear to have been characterized as Hitler, as I didn’t see anything in the first two pages of a Google search, but his last name throws a lot of false positives for its other meanings.

  3. Jonah Goldberg posted this to Facebook: “Already, editorial boards are preparing their indictments of what they believe to be Donald Trump’s incompetence, bigotry, and authoritarianism. Trump operatives will undoubtedly respond: ‘That’s what they always say about Republicans.’ And they’ll be right.”
