This week in Guild Wars 2

Hopefully this will be the last time we’ll need to post TWIGW2 here, as GuildMag is moving to a new hosting service. Once the site is back up and running at the new host, I’ll re-publish this article and last week’s posts so they will at least appear in the right sequence.

Once the proposal is finalized it will be discussed internally. However there will be no promise of associated actions or schedule. Thank you all so much for your hard work and your passion toward making GW2 awesome. This has been a really good CDI and I want to thank you on behalf of Arena for caring so much about the world we love.”

Fan articles and blog posts

  • Reddit — How the cash-shop focus is destroying GW2. “I have been active in these forums for a while helping to give feedback on items that I think are lacking. However after some time you keep repeating yourself in many threads on the symptoms of some underlaying problems. Anet recently ask for feedback so I will give my feedback in this way and hope they will try to look at this with an open mind. Even if it turns out they will do nothing with this advise I am happy knowing I did participate in these forums doing my duty reporting what in my eyes where the problems. So in order to stop (or at least lower) participating in all those threads I decided to make 3 threads that all have one of the underlaying problems I think are the reason for all the problems we see in the game.”
  • Reddit — Of Feathered Winged Ones; or, I Dream of Mursaat. ” WARNING: This is the ramblings of a devout Mursaat fanatic, of which, assures the length of this read to be quite long !!!TYRIAN LORE SPOILERS WARNING – PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS TO YOUR OWN LORE STATE!!!”
  • Duke — A (Re)Introduction. “Hello! My name’s Duke and I’m responsible for this lovely blog! Given the influx in new followers recently thanks to this I thought it would be a good time to tell you about me! I play Guild Wars 2 quite a bit. As do you, probably. Quite good innit?”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Flipping Exotics, Ascended Inscriptions, and Other Items. “Received this email from someone wishing to remain anonymous. I believe they are three good questions, so here goes…”
  • Duke — I began this blog during June last year and since then it’s grown and grown. “The initial readership consisted of members of my guild and server community, brought here to read my ‘after action reports’ – tales of times when I somewhat successfully commanded in WvW. These posts are possibly some of my most favourite but least read on the site – mainly describing (and showing) incredible sieges or fantastic skirmishes.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Everybody Loves Jewelry. “While leveling, I found myself most likely to buy a few items in particular: weapons, jewelry, and underwater weapons. Let’s take a look at four jewelry items that levelers frequently buy”
  • Twitter — @DragonSeasonCom. “The devs have thought of ways to address the dominance of zerker builds. More on that next week: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/professions/balance/PvE-Revising-the-DPS-Meta/first#post3480529 ~Tilion #RedPosts”
  • manylaughs — Going for 1000 gold – Day 9. “The tortoise approach is guaranteed. The hare, not so much.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Move Aside Might… Precision is Here. “As players get accustomed to their characters, they are more likely to try stats besides Might on their gear. Read up on my “Everybody Loves Jewelry” post for insight into why so many newbie players spend their gold on trinkets with plus might on them.”
  • MMORPG.com — Living Story VS. Expansion, Fight! “When Guild Wars 2 first launched, players flocked to the game in swarms at an insane pace, which of course had to have made ArenaNet very happy. As those players continued on their quests they eventually reached max level, and needed more content to play through. ArenaNet came up with the Living Story to not only add more content, but to constantly evolve the game world. While the Living Story may help keep players occupied, is it enough to quench our thirst for new content, or is it time for an expansion?”
  • The Road Less Pwned — Tasty Tyria – Blueberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream. “Some of my friends that read this blog may remember my old geeky food blog, Cooking Up Geekdom. The premise of the blog was to make recipes found in works of science fiction or fantasy (be it books, movies, tv shows, or video games) and make them in real life. Cooking Up Geekdom no longer exists as I found that creating recipes several times a week and then photographing them was far too time consuming for me. However, I’ve decided to bring recipes to The Road Less Pwned, but in a much more limited capacity. I will be adding a new recipe to this blog once per month.”
  • Reddit — [WvW] What is the best counter to omega siege golems? “TL;DR There are a lot more omega golems in WvW how can a small group of 10 – 20 take one out it a decent time (before we lose the tower we are defending)”
  • Reddit — Spreadsheet of Healing Skills, with their effective Healing per Second and bonuses from Healing Power. “So, I was throwing this together just for my own curiosity and figured I’d share it with you guys.”
  • Twitter — @HuntersInsight. “Sometimes it seems like it takes inhuman effort to meet people who aren’t elitist dicks in a pvp setting.”
  • Twitter — @DragonSeasonCom. “@HuntersInsight All is vain… ~Tilion”
  • manylaughs — Going for 1000 gold – 250g. “Today, I’m one quarter of the way to my goal. In barely more than a week and a half, I’ve gone Golden and I’ve more than double my gold.”
  • On the official Guild Wars 2 forums, Blood Red Arachnid.2493 posted on the topic To clear the air about Berserker: “The whole zerker problem isn’t obvious to the casual observer. In fact, it isn’t obvious to the devs, either, which is why there is a “problem” to begin with. The “problem” itself is actually multi-faceted, so it will take some time to explain.”
  • Chronicles of Tyria — Translation: SAB Books. “Welcome back to another CoT Translation! This week will be about a few hidden gems that can be found inside Moto’s Super Adventure Box. Three book covers can be found in almost any house, shop or hidden area of SAB. On those covers, the devs had some fun mocking their own content.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Disaster Looms for Incredibly Lucrative Market. “Examples of What to Buy for the Patch. As many of you know, the next patch to Guild Wars 2 is coming at the end of the month. Are you prepared? Have you bought a few stacks of items like Silver, hoping for a big gain? Perhaps Mithril as well (although I believe this may not jump again quite like it did a few weeks ago).”
  • manylaughs — Going for 1000 gold – Day 11. “I like to keep it simple. For the most part, I make runes, sigils and bags. That’s about it. Yes, of course, I dabble in other things and sell them, particularly if it’s really worth it. Right now, it’s hard to ignore the profit margin on ascended items like damask, for instance. Even though damask takes longer to make than anything else I make consistently, I make it and sell it every night.”
  • Massively — Exclusive preview of Guild Wars 2‘s Origin of Madness release. “The end is near! After a brief period of peace and quiet, Guild Wars 2‘s update cadence will begin again, and ArenaNet has no plans to ease Tyria gently back into the groove. Next week brings the first of four releases, which will culminate in the end of GW2‘s Scarlet Briar story arc.”
  • Duke — Lion’s Arch.
  • Reddit — Any BlackBerry users? There is a BBMChannel for GW2. “If you use a BlackBerry, check out the BBM Channel “GW2 Gamer”, C0012ECE5. It’s a fan based channel, but hopefully be another way to share ideas.”
  • Eurogamer.net — You thought that was it for Guild Wars 2? “Unless you’re beating World of Warcraft you’re a nobody, a not-quite, another MMO crashing against the impregnable fortress Blizzard built. Guild Wars 2 was a somebody, a real contender – the fastest-selling MMO ever, shifting 3m copies in nine months. But were this a race, WOW would now be comfortably out in front, racking up 5 million subscribers in a little over a year. Is that it – has Guild Wars 2 begun a gentle decline into obscurity?”
  • Kotaku — Now That’s An Impressive Boss Monster, Guild Wars 2. “The living story that ran through 2013 in Guild Wars 2 escalates in 2014, as the arch-villain Scarlet Briar unleashes a massive mechanical monstrosity on the unsuspecting denizens of Tyria. Meet the Twisted Marionette.”
  • Reddit — The Origins of Madness – Map Locations. “Together with some other explorers of Piken Square (Coop Greendale, Barrna and Cath Bel Arh – thanks for the help!), we have found the locations of the Wurm (pretty easy) and of the Marionette fight (more challenging).”
  • Dulfy.net — Gemstore update–Metallurgic dyes, nodes and metabolic primer. “A list of items introduced with the latest GW2 gemstore update, which includes Metallurgic dye kit, basic ore node back, and metabolic primers. Basic Ore Node Pack – 800 gems Click to create copper, silver, and gold mining nodes in your home instance. Each node can be mined once per day.”
  • Dulfy.net — The Origins of Madness patch starts on Jan 21. “A new trailer was revealed on the GW2 official website showcasing some of the content players can expect on Jan 21 with a patch titled The Origins of Madness.”
  • Massively — Flameseeker Chronicles: Taking Guild Wars 2 job specialization to a new level. “Have you been missing something in Guild Wars 2? Do you wish your character had a way to unlock new abilities that was more involved than spending a handful of skill points? Did you ever dream of subclasses? If you’ve wanted any of that — or, conversely, if you haven’t — it might interest you to check out the progress of the horizontal progression collaborative development initiative thread on the GW2 official forums. Colin Johanson and Chris Whiteside have both been involved, giving feedback on everything from reward systems to ways in which subclasses might be unlocked and helping direct the discussion. If ArenaNet were to implement anything similar to what’s being proposed, it would mean a massive shakeup in how GW2 plays, so let’s break down how it could be implemented and why it might be useful for enhancing character progression.”
  • Reddit — My theory on the LS ending. “Now it seems more and more that Scarlet is someone who is doing things for the greater good. I know that may not be the most popular theory, but personally I find it will be the most likely from what we know currently. I highly believe she is gearing up to fight a dragon; probably primodious.”
  • Reddit — Condensed List of Preview Links. “I love coming here to see everyone’s cool ideas for armor and dye combinations, so I thought I would contribute something potentially useful to the community. I’ve taken the armor chat codes from Argos Soft’s super awesome website and condensed them so that people can preview multiple chat codes in quick succession.”
  • Kill Ten Rats — Living Story Season 1 Startup. “The first hints to this year’s Living Story kickoff dropped this morning with an ominously voiced video showcasing the major content of next week’s Origins of Madness. The Origins of Madness chapter is one of the last four for the first season of the Living Story. I think maybe we will learn about Scarlet’s origins? That’s mostly unclear with the official preview page not up yet. I am hoping for some personal story-ish content as well.”
  • Twitter — @Ecksearoh. “Rox, Braham, Marjory, Canach, and the new Asura would make a neat Destiny’s Edge 2.0. #gw2 #guildwars2” “If we don’t see Canach in the last four chapters, we will need a blog post updating us on his situation. #gw2 #guildwars2” “Almost two year later and we still don’t have a Black Lion filter for “only usable by my profession” #gw2 #guildwars2″
  • Twitter — @emaGW2. “The new marionette seems to have picked up the name “Tin Tart” already. Should be fun when it’s released 🙂 #guildwars2 #gw2″
  • manylaughs — Going for the gold – Sell your junk. “Do you need everything you’re keeping?”
  • Gamebreaker.tv — Where Is Scarlet’s Story Arc In Guild Wars 2 Taking Us? “Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of debate in the community over what the big surprise with the conclusion of the first major story arc in the Living Story will be. Last week Colin Johanson fanned the flames of these speculations with his blog post containing a video recapping the various developments over the last year. He finished that post by saying “The answer to all of these questions await in our four upcoming releases in 2014: and lead to one final moment that will change the face of Tyria forever.” Hmm… a single moment which will change the face of Tyria forever. Previously he had also stated the finale would be “one epic finale that will rock Tyria to its very core” which sounds epic to say the least.”
  • Reddit — Trading Post manipulation – 100 Gold fast & easy. “It’s been a couple of days that when I open the Trading Post I see in the main page items I’ve never seen there before, items that in no time have highly risen in price (e.g. the Lightning Catcher Skin, see http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/43909, from 30 to 90 Gold). https://i.imgur.com/Ccpj9R7.jpg I have been asking myself: is it possible to foresee which items will rise in price? The answer is YES. The items must have these features”
  • Nerdy Bookahs — Iron Marches – Screenshot Gallery. “I love the look of Ascalon in Guild Wars 2: The ruins from the times when humans were living in that area and now the new modern buildings that the charr have constructed. It could be such a great place – if there wasn’t the Dragonbrand going right through the area. Oh, and ghosts. There are lots of human ghosts from the old times when it was human territory (after they stole the land from the charr. Bad humans. BAD, I say!) who won’t go away and who can’t be killed.”
  • Quaggan’s Press — January 14th gemstore update. “Today ArenaNet has released the following three items in the gemstore”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Buy Silver and These 3 Items IMMEDIATELY. “Now is the time to buy Silver ore before things really get out of hand. Already rising in price from 50 to 90 copper in four days, Silver is likely to continue until it reaches the 2-3 silver mark. That’s my expectation anyway, which would make investing at 90 copper a no-brainer.”
  • The Road Less Pwned — Ellara’s Travels – Queensdale Part 3. “Hello everyone! First of all, I wanted to thank everyone that checked out my first recipe, Blueberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream. I was blown away by the number of people that I heard from saying that they were excited to try it. I hope you all enjoy it!”
  • manylaughs — Going for 1000 gold – Gathering. “I gather all the time, but I do my gathering in the course of playing the game. If I’m waiting for a party to show up, I’ll run around and gather nodes. If I’m running through a zone, doing events, I’ll gather nodes as I move from one place to the next. If I’m doing the world boss train, and I spot a rich vein or an orichalcum node, it only takes a moment to gather it.”
  • Twitter — @ChroniclesTyria. “CoT’s first annual calendar is up for sale! Art for every month have been done by members of our community! http://www.cafepress.com/cottradingpost.1221260612 @GW2Cm”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — Five Things You Should Do For Origins of Madness! “Below you’ll find our five tips to help you get a head start for the content up and coming this Tuesday. Waiting til the last minute is going to cause more chaos that necessary so start now and get this stuff done this weekend while you still have time! You surely don’t want to be trying to get some Black Lion Keys while your guild is prepping to tackle one of the new bosses.”
  • Reddit — Malchor’s Leap Champion Farming Guide. “Hi, I’m Scyzx from Sanctum of Rall, and I wanted to bring up a new farm my guild, Krypt of Living Legends [KILL], has started doing and I would like to bring it to your attention. Every server should be able to do this farm and it is quite fun.”
  • manylaughs — Going for 1000 gold – Join a good guild. “For Dwayna’s sake, join a good guild.”
  • Life as a Digital Salad — Shut Down The Black Lion Trading Post. “That title sure got your attention! What has the Black Lion ever done to me you’re probably wondering. Nothing at all, and I am a fan of the “down for maintenance” Quaggan just like anybody else. This post is really part 3 to my series on video game Digital Economics; looking into whether in-game trading posts are good or bad. Lets make a start!”
  • Twitter — @DragonSeasonCom. “Stay up-to-date with all the latest Guild Wars 2 news by visiting our platform: http://DragonSeason.com/News – Any feedback is appreciated. ~Til”
  • Reddit — [NEWS] In Case you Missed It! – Guild Wars 2 Weekly News Round Up #5: January 10th to 17th, 2014. “Greetings Comrades of the Moletariate! Hello fellow Tyrians! Welcome back to another /r/guildwars2’s “In Case you Missed It!” The Weekly Roundup of all those pesky things that you saw at work but forgot to upvote so you could find them and read when you got home! This episode is a little late today, my apologies on that. Schooling started up for me this week and classes about Astronomy tend to go a little loooooong.”

  • Chronicles of Tyria — Chapter 2; Part 1: Unnaturally Natural. “Everything around me seemed to have grown naturally, like I was standing underneath some big tree. Where were the imposing walls of iron, and the magnificent gleams of steel? Where was the warm roaring of the forges, the sharp clashing of blades and the passionate cries of battle? I wanted to growl, to scream, to …”
  • Grimcrotch — Lessons Learned. “After a few weeks of practice throwing a hatchet, Grim changed Rafka’s stance to the Asura ranger technique of leaping and throwing sideways. It seemed to work well for the strange little humanoids, and she was even better at that being small like them, the depth of the blade entering the targets was nearly to…”
  • Chronicles of Tyria — Chapter Seven: Observer (part 3). “There was no point in trying to answer the questions swimming in my head. And only more surfaced as I stood in front of the massive asura gate in the center of Divinity’s Reach. One of the small asura themselves stood by the gate, I assumed to change the destination. I stood around the area…”
  • Grimcrotch — Iron Man. “Outside the shack on the war wagon prep deck were cylinders of the various gases used in welding, and from inside the wall cracks you could see the source of a shower of sparks falling all over them. Grimpaw Grindgear stood inside next to a giant vise holding a 3 foot caterpillar track link, visor…”
  • Deviantart — THE PACK FOREVER. “I have been translating a #GuildWars2 story from Spanish to English for a good friend of mine!”
  • Chronicles of Tyria — Chapter 2, Part 3: G.O.L.E.M. “‘It is clear – abundantly so – that the sensory system as a whole will have to be completely re-worked. Logic trees appear adequate to perform simple tasks for guidance feedback, but you have neglected to implement even the most rudimentary of shielding and so aural input is rendered meaningless.’ Their faces, expectant and nodding…”
