This week in Guild Wars 2 news

I’ve been accumulating news snippets about the as-yet-to-be-formally-scheduled release of Guild Wars 2 for an email newsletter I send out to my friends and acquaintances in the Guild Wars community. The game is still in closed alpha testing, and the closed beta is expected to begin by the end of the year. We are expecting to get the final profession reveal sometime in the next week or two, so that should be a big outpouring of new information for us to absorb.

Part 1: Discussion of previous news

  • If you listen to podcasts, you might want to subscribe to the Guildcast weekly podcast
  • Reminder: the official Guild Wars 2 wiki is still growing, so it’s worth checking it out now and again for new information.

Part 2: Guild Wars Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and EotN news

Part 3: Guild Wars 2 news

The trinity vs the hybrid. “A Guild Wars 2 podcast (see link in roundup below) played devil’s advocate trying to list possible reasons why Guild Wars 2 might fail. One was that players will figure out what the best builds are, and how to make the trinity work. They used the guardian as a tank in their example (which they then pointed out was an unfortunate example). However, the point remains… what if there is an optimal way to play the trinity, and Guild Wars 2 end up being like that… “

The Rev at the Guild Wars 2 studios. “The Reverend en Fuego checks out the ArenaNet studios and gets a look at the the game Guild Wars 2.”

Kill Ten Rats: [GW2] Interview with ArenaNet’s Eric Flannum. “‘Iteration’ is a word emphasized by ArenaNet. It seems something greater than mere polish, and I asked ArenaNet if they could entertain a few questions about their design and development practice. What does it really mean to iterate? Guild Wars 2 Lead Designer Eric Flannum graciously took some time to talk about the term and what it means to the studio and Guild Wars 2.”

Eric Flannum responds to comments on the KTR interview. “I wanted to clear up some misconceptions that the way I worded things in the interview may have caused as well as clarify some points that I see people commenting on frequently elsewhere on the boards. “

Ranty McRanterson. “Childishness. That’s the only thing I can attribute to some peoples attitude. Getting mad and getting impatient about Guild Wars 2 not having a release date is just plain dumb. Arenanet has no obligation to satisfy your personal expectations of when the game should come out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as enthusiastic to see a release date, to have the game in my hands, as anyone else. I’ve got hundreds of blog posts to prove that point. But do I get all whiny and irritable about it?”

Mintchip tells us why we should play Guild Wars 2. “MMO extraordinaire Mintchip just posted a video on YouTube about her top five reasons everyone should play Guild Wars 2. And there is no disagreeing with her!”
