{"id":9989,"date":"2011-06-23T09:30:59","date_gmt":"2011-06-23T13:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=9989"},"modified":"2011-08-09T11:23:12","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T15:23:12","slug":"your-social-media-reputation-and-your-future-employment-prospects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2011\/06\/23\/your-social-media-reputation-and-your-future-employment-prospects\/","title":{"rendered":"Your social media reputation and your future employment prospects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/ChrisRewards\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Greaves<\/a> posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/article\/1013627--vancouver-rioters-got-rowdy-then-got-fired?bn=1#.TgMj-MVl4hM;twitter\" target=\"_blank\">this link<\/a>, which should be a warning to everyone to be (even more) careful about your online reputation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Camille Cacnio, a part-time receptionist at a car dealership, was caught in a 3-second video clip, stealing clothing from a looted store during the Stanley Cup riots.<\/p>\n<p>She was fired.<\/p>\n<p>Professional mountain biker Alex Prochazka posed in front of a burning car, while wearing a T-shirt from his sponsor Oakley.<\/p>\n<p>The sunglass company promptly dropped him.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter Connor Mcilvenna declared the riots \u201cawesome\u201d on his Facebook page, and posted several pro-riot status updates, such as \u201catta boy vancity!!! show em how we do it!!!\u201d and \u201cvancouver needed remodeling anyway&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RiteTech Construction was listed as his employer on his Facebook profile, and the next morning, Mcilvenna was fired.<\/p>\n<p>His boss said he was flooded with emails and didn\u2019t want the company\u2019s reputation linked to the man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this will be a turning point in how employers look at social media,\u201d said Peter Eastwood, a partner at Borden Ladner Gervais in Vancouver. \u201cThis is an extremely powerful tool that has potentially enormous and immediate consequences for a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is something the early bloggers had to face, that what you post online (or what is posted about you) will be there <em>forever<\/em>. No rational employer is going to offer you a job in future without at the very least running a Google search on you, and there&#8217;s already a niche market for employers to explore (doing a deeper search on prospective employees). Background check and personal references?
