V\u00f5 Nguy\u00ean Gi\u00e1p answers with a siege: anti-air guns on the surrounding hills, trenches creeping forward, and relentless assaults on strongpoints Beatrice, Gabrielle, and Isabelle.<\/p>\n<p>After weeks of bombardment and failed resupply, the fortress collapses in May 1954.
