{"id":980,"date":"2009-09-14T18:59:44","date_gmt":"2009-09-14T22:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=980"},"modified":"2009-09-14T16:04:20","modified_gmt":"2009-09-14T20:04:20","slug":"should-publicly-funded-media-be-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2009\/09\/14\/should-publicly-funded-media-be-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Should publicly funded media be free?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s just set aside the whole question about whether the government should be even <em>in<\/em> the media-provider business* . . . <em>if<\/em> the government paid for it (that is, if <em>you<\/em> paid for it), shouldn&#8217;t it be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2009\/09\/14\/all-publicly-funded.html\" target=\"_blank\">available to you for free<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s put aside my personal frustration at having my work locked away. The real question here is, since CBC content is funded by the public, shouldn&#8217;t the public own it? Or at least have access to it? Actually, the CBC archives are just the tip of the iceberg: the overwhelming majority of stuff made <strong>for<\/strong> Canadians <strong>with<\/strong> Canadians&#8217; money is <strong>inaccessible<\/strong> to Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, movies are supported by Telefilm, TV by the Canadian Television Fund, books and art by The Canada Council for the Arts, and so on. But most of this stuff isn&#8217;t distributed very well or for very long, and you can only get your hands on a fraction of it.<\/p>\n<p>So I want to put forth one more contrarian position: I think that any publicly funded content should (within, say, 5 years of its creation) be released to the public domain.<\/p>\n<p>Thoughts? <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>* No, they bloody shouldn&#8217;t be.
