{"id":9743,"date":"2011-06-10T12:56:33","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T16:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=9743"},"modified":"2011-06-10T13:32:26","modified_gmt":"2011-06-10T17:32:26","slug":"royal-navy-still-regrets-decision-to-retire-their-aircraft-carriers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2011\/06\/10\/royal-navy-still-regrets-decision-to-retire-their-aircraft-carriers\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Navy still regrets decision to retire their aircraft carriers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a significant portion of the Royal Navy deployed in the Mediterranean, the hasty decision to take <em>HMS Ark Royal<\/em> out of service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savetheroyalnavy.org\/wordpress\/asking-the-navy-to-do-more-and-more-with-less-and-less\" target=\"_blank\">looks even dumber now<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Just at the very moment that the decisions of the October 2010 \u201cStrategic Defence Review\u201d start to bite, the Royal Navy is being asked by government to do more than ever. With the crisis in Libya and the Middle East showing no signs of ending, RN warships are spread thin across the globe. A quick snapshot of the fleet shows the pace of operations. With such a tiny fleet, our naval ports are almost empty and there are few vessels able to provide reliefs should the Libya crisis continue or escalate.<\/p>\n<p>RN ships involved in Operation Ellamy off Libya include <em>HMS Ocean<\/em>, <em>HMS Albion<\/em>, <em>HMS Sutherland<\/em>, <em>HMS Liverpool<\/em>, <em>HMS Brocklesby<\/em> and <em>HMS Bangor<\/em> and <em>HMS Triumph<\/em>. The RFA is playing an increasing role with <em>RFA Fort Rosalie<\/em>, <em>RFA Wave Knight<\/em> supporting them. <em>RFA Argus<\/em>, <em>RFA Fort Victoria<\/em> and <em>RFA Cardigan Bay<\/em> are ready off Yemen should UK citizens need to be evacuated. RN patrols in the Arabian Gulf continue (as they have since 1980) with <em>HMS St Albans<\/em> sailing this week to relieve <em>HMS Iron Duke<\/em> in addition to the 4 permanently deployed RN minehunters in the Gulf. <em>HMS Richmond<\/em> is involved in exercises in the Far East and <em>HMS Edinburgh<\/em> has sailed to relieve <em>HMS York<\/em> in the South Atlantic along with <em>HMS Scott<\/em>. <em>RFA Wave Knight<\/em> is in the Caribbean ready to provide relief in case of hurricanes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That fleet is spread very thin indeed.
