The Kingston<\/em>-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel (MCDV) has been in RCN service starting in the mid-1990s and they’ve apparently done well for the navy in their intended role. Unfortunately, naval ships have a normal working life expectancy of 20-30 years, and the Kingston<\/em>s are at the upper end of that range, so it’s not surprising that they will be taken out of service. It is a bit of a surprise that the announcement came on Thursday and two-thirds of the class will be paid off this fall<\/a>, without a direct successor class of ships on the slipways:<\/p>\n

Starting this fall the Royal Canadian Navy will begin divesting of the Kingston<\/em>-class vessels. Eight of the Kingston will be divested while four, Moncton<\/em>, Yellowknife<\/em>, Edmonton<\/em>, and Nanaimo<\/em> will remain in service for the time being.<\/p>\n

Formal ceremonies will take place in Halifax for Shawinigan<\/em>, Summerside<\/em>, Goose Bay<\/em>, Glace Bay<\/em> and Kingston<\/em>. Ceremonies in Esquimalt, B.C. will be held for Saskatoon<\/em>, Whitehorse<\/em> and Brandon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The remaining four will be divested over the next three years:<\/p>\n
