{"id":88021,"date":"2024-03-13T03:00:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T07:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=88021"},"modified":"2024-03-12T16:19:51","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T20:19:51","slug":"the-true-online-harms-are-coming-from-inside-the-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2024\/03\/13\/the-true-online-harms-are-coming-from-inside-the-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"The true &#8220;Online Harms&#8221; are coming from <em>inside<\/em> the bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/online-harms-bill-margaret-atwood-1.7141165\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state media lapdog CBC<\/a> admits that the Trudeau government&#8217;s proposed <em>Online Harms Act<\/em> is an incredibly authoritarian piece of legislation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Justice Minister Arif Virani is defending his government&#8217;s Online Harms Bill after celebrated Canadian writer Margaret Atwood shared views comparing the new legislation to George Orwell&#8217;s dystopian novel <em>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The award-winning author took to social media late last week to share an article from the British magazine <em>The Spectator<\/em> titled, &#8220;Trudeau&#8217;s Orwellian online harms bill&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If this account of the bill is true, it&#8217;s <em>Lettres de Cachet<\/em> all over again,&#8221; Atwood wrote on X, referring to letters once sent out by the King of France authorizing imprisonment without trial.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government introduced late last month its long-awaited Online Harms Bill, which proposes to police seven categories of harmful content online, including content used to bully a child, content that sexualizes children or victims of sexual violence, content that incites violence or terrorism, and hate speech.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MargaretAtwood\/status\/1766323300853297262\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Margaret-Atwood-TwitX-2024-03-08.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"693\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Margaret-Atwood-TwitX-2024-03-08.png 553w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Margaret-Atwood-TwitX-2024-03-08-511x640.png 511w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Margaret-Atwood-TwitX-2024-03-08-120x150.png 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of proposed amendments, &#8220;hate speech&#8221; would be defined based on Supreme Court of Canada decisions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The possibilities for revenge false accusations + thoughtcrime stuff are sooo inviting!&#8221; Atwood wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In Orwell&#8217;s cautionary novel about a totalitarian society, thoughtcrime is the illegal act of disagreeing with the government&#8217;s political ideology in one&#8217;s unspoken thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Atwood famously tackled authoritarian regimes in her novel <em>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em>, in which a religious patriarchal society forces women to bear children and those who speak freely are severely punished.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even the state media lapdog CBC admits that the Trudeau government&#8217;s proposed Online Harms Act is an incredibly authoritarian piece of legislation: Justice Minister Arif Virani is defending his government&#8217;s Online Harms Bill after celebrated Canadian writer Margaret Atwood shared views comparing the new legislation to George Orwell&#8217;s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
