Even according to the most optimistic estimates of government spokespeople, the two factories \u2014 one <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/volkswagen-13-billion-biggest-corporate-welfare-payout-in-modern-canadian-history\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">operated by Volkswagen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/ford-freeland-spar-over-stellantis-battery-plant\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the other by Stellantis<\/a> \u2014 would create about 5,500 jobs. Per job, that&#8217;s roughly $5 million in lifetime subsidies and tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>But now, it appears that many of those jobs may not even go to Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, during a visit by South Korean Ambassador Woongsoon Lim to Windsor, Ont., a social media post by the Windsor Police <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WindsorPolice\/status\/1725253708311900412\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">casually mentioned<\/a> that &#8220;1,600 South Koreans&#8221; would soon be arriving in the community to staff the Stellantis plant, which is set to open next year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<p><em>With the new LGEngergy Solutions battery plant being built, we expect approximately 1,600 South Koreans traveling to work and live in our community in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Windsor Police (@WindsorPolice) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WindsorPolice\/status\/1725253708311900412\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 16, 2023<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CEO of NextStar \u2014 the Stellantis joint venture operating the factory \u2014 hasn&#8217;t confirmed the 1,600 figure, but said in a statement that the &#8220;equipment installation phase of the project requires additional temporary specialized global supplier staff&#8221;.
