He will be accused of collaboration with the Nazis and of having &#8220;sold his sold to the devil&#8221;. The core of the accusation is that in return for negotiating with the SS and saving a relatively small number of Jews, he facilitated the mass murder of many more. Kasztner will become so hated among  sections of Israel&#8217;s population that he will be assassinated in 1957. How can we judge Kasztner&#8217;s actions now, with the benefit of our historical vantage point? However you view it, the Kasztner affair surely demonstrates that the past is never settled, it is continually refought in the present.
