Prior to 1982, Margaret Thatcher&#8217;s government was planning major defence cuts including withdrawing the military from the South Atlantic. Instead, they spent nearly \u00a33 billion defending British sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, and to this day maintain a garrison there.
