This myth was adapted by the Nazis as “Bolshevistic Hordes”, but the principal existed prior to them. The Nazis propagandized that the Soviet people are a lesser, near subhuman race, which they believed needed to be exterminated, and that the political system in place in the USSR was degenerate and weak. When they began experiencing fiercer resistance than they had expected they rolled out the old excuse of hordes, arguing that purely because of sheer numbers the Soviets were able to overwhelm the Germans by engulfing their lines with poorly trained troops in “human wave” offensives.

This is completely false, and Soviet weaponry and doctrine was among the most advanced in the world at the time. There is however a kernel of truth that the Soviet Union did suffer an enormous and disproportionate number of military casualties, especially early in the war, but was mostly able to replace them.

So what do you think? What role did the size of the Soviet population play?

World War Two Published 28 Sep 2021 What is left of the Red Army after the smashing offensives of Operation Barbarossa and Fall Blau, and what have Stavka done to rebuild it?
