But now in a matter of years, it has been completely swept aside by the new Soviet government in the name of progress and reason. This is just one &mdash; particularly violent &mdash; example of what has been a common theme of this era: the conflict between religion and modernity.<\/p>\n<p>It has already come a few times in the series and will continue to do so, but it&#8217;s not always a story of retreating faith like it is in this episode. As you will see in later episodes, organized religion often fights back against modernity and even sometimes tries to accommodate it.
