Try telling that to architects and their acolytes, though, and you&#8217;ll get an earful about why your feeling is <em>misguided<\/em>, the product of some embarrassing misconception about architectural principles. One defense, typically, is that these eyesores are, in reality, incredible feats of engineering. After all, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blobitecture\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blobitecture<\/a>&#8221; \u2014 which, we regret to say, is a real school of contemporary architecture \u2014 is created using complicated computer-driven algorithms! You may <em>think<\/em> the ensuing blob-structure looks like a tentacled turd, or a crumpled kleenex, but that&#8217;s because you don&#8217;t have an architect&#8217;s trained eye. <\/p>\n<p>Another thing you will often hear from design-school types is that contemporary architecture is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asmscalemodels.com\/blog\/2016\/4\/21\/brutalist-architecture-raw-honest-and-blunt\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>honest<\/em><\/a>. It doesn&#8217;t rely on the forms and usages of the past, and it is not interested in <em>coddling you and your dumb feelings<\/em>. Wake up, sheeple! Your boss hates you, and your bloodsucking landlord too, and your government fully intends to grind you between its gears. That&#8217;s the world we live in! Get used to it! Fans of Brutalism \u2014 the blocky-industrial-concrete school of architecture \u2014 are quick to emphasize that these buildings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/06\/t-magazine\/design\/brutalist-architecture-revival.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>tell it like it is<\/em><\/a>, as if this somehow excused the fact that they look, at best, dreary, and, at worst, like the headquarters of some kind of post-apocalyptic totalitarian dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>Brianna Rennix and Nathan J.
