{"id":5884,"date":"2010-10-16T12:30:17","date_gmt":"2010-10-16T16:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=5884"},"modified":"2010-10-16T12:32:11","modified_gmt":"2010-10-16T16:32:11","slug":"court-makes-a-mockery-of-freedom-of-speech-in-bail-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2010\/10\/16\/court-makes-a-mockery-of-freedom-of-speech-in-bail-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Court makes a mockery of &#8220;freedom of speech&#8221; in bail conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not particularly fond of the organizers of the G20 protests (see the general tone of my posts during the <a href=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/tag\/g20\/\" target=\"_blank\">G20 meetings<\/a> for proof), but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/torontog20summit\/article\/875746--staggering-conditions-on-accused-g20-ringleader\" target=\"_blank\">this court decision<\/a> is <em>obscene<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Alex Hundert\u2019s words will not appear in this story.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other Canadians, he\u2019s not allowed to speak to the press.<\/p>\n<p>At least that\u2019s how a court interpreted the new bail conditions placed on Hundert, an accused ringleader of violence during the G20 summit in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s staggering in its breadth,\u201d said John Norris, Hundert\u2019s lawyer. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard of anything as broad as that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hundert, 30, faces three counts of conspiracy pertaining to G20 activities, and was released in July on $100,000 bail with about 20 terms, including not participating in any public demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his release, the Crown filed an appeal to revoke his bail. Superior Court Justice Todd Ducharme ruled against that appeal.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 17, shortly after Ducharme\u2019s decision, Hundert was arrested for participating in a panel discussion at Ryerson University &mdash; which police deemed to be a public demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday Hundert agreed to the new, more stringent, bail conditions.<\/p>\n<p>They include a clarification of the no-demonstration rule, to include a restriction on planning, participating in, or attending any public event that expresses views on a political issue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is just <em>wrong<\/em>. No government or court should have this power: he&#8217;s an accused criminal, but he has not been convicted of a crime.
