Obviously, jazz was &#8220;free&#8221; and difficult (mad-looking Belgians with crazy hair, billowing luminescent smocks and angular, clarinet-looking instruments) or else it was nostalgic (Harry Connick Jr <em>et al<\/em>). Ironically, for a type of music so obsessed with modern and the &#8220;now&#8221;, jazz has always been preoccupied with the past, so much so that during the Eighties and Nineties it became less and less able to reflect modern culture.
