It\u2019s tough, and I\u2019ve spent the last little while trying to come up with an analogy that\u2019s layperson-friendly and memorable.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that it already exists, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vrypan\" target=\"_blank\">Panayotis Vryonis<\/a> [&#8230;], came up with it. Go over to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.vrypan.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">his blog<\/a> and check out the article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.vrypan.net\/2013\/08\/28\/public-key-cryptography-for-non-geeks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public-key cryptography for non-geeks<\/a>. Whenever I have to explain what private keys and public keys are for to someone who\u2019s new to cryptography, I use Vryonis\u2019 \u201cbox with special lock and special keys\u201d analogy. Not only does the explanation work, but it\u2019s so good that the people I\u2019ve used it on have used it themselves to explain public-key crypto to others.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve recently used Vryonis\u2019 analogy in a couple of presentations and thought I\u2019d share images from my slides.
