They note that Rand is \u201cachingly on trend\u201d and \u201chaving a moment.\u201d Oh, dear. By my amateur estimation, Rand\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20010822001344\/http:\/\/www.business2.com\/articles\/mag\/print\/0,1643,16581,FF.html\" target=\"_blank\">moment-having<\/a>\u201d has been reoccurring every seven or eight years since the end of the Second World War, yet is always heralded with the same air of surprise and alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I am an unalloyed fan of the woman. Of course, like countless conceited teenagers before and after me, I was relieved to learn of Rand\u2019s very existence, let alone her staggering success \u2014 evidence, surely, that more of \u201cus\u201d were not only out there, somewhere, but <em>right<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Especially for <a href=\"http:\/\/takimag.com\/article\/type_over_hype_kathy_shaidle\/print#axzz4eXFnzWIY\" target=\"_blank\">a particular variety of female<\/a>, Rand\u2019s mannish ambition and uncompromising idealism set a rare and welcome example. Unlike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberussr.com\/adg\/rand-king.html\" target=\"_blank\">Florence King<\/a>, who broke her braces trying to mimic <em>The Fountainhead<\/em>\u2019s imperious heroine, I found Rand\u2019s thick fictions impossible to swallow.<\/p>\n<p>However, I eagerly read <em>The Virtue of Selfishness<\/em> while in high school.
