{"id":3798,"date":"2010-05-19T08:53:48","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T12:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=3798"},"modified":"2018-11-18T10:54:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-18T15:54:14","slug":"remembering-dunkirk-70-years-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2010\/05\/19\/remembering-dunkirk-70-years-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Dunkirk, 70 years on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the 70th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation, where <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/8689964.stm\" target=\"_blank\">338,000 British and French troops<\/a> were carried out of the German encirclement by just about everything that could float.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Without Dunkirk, Britain wouldn&#8217;t have had an Army and it&#8217;s extremely questionable whether Britain could have fought the war,&#8221; he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hewitt gives the credit to the Royal Navy and Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, who led the operation, but also to all the civilians who helped.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They thought they would bring back 30-40,000. In the end they rescued 338,000 British and French troops.
