The object being to inculcate pretentious guilt <a href=\"http:\/\/davidthompson.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d83451675669e201b7c8d42930970b-pi\" target=\"_blank\">via some notional group association<\/a>, making a person feel somehow responsible for the actions of others, even strangers long dead, over whom he or she has zero influence.
