{"id":37255,"date":"2017-02-11T04:00:05","date_gmt":"2017-02-11T09:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=37255"},"modified":"2017-02-10T16:26:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-10T21:26:44","slug":"britains-silent-service-reported-to-be-the-absent-service-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2017\/02\/11\/britains-silent-service-reported-to-be-the-absent-service-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain&#8217;s &#8220;silent service&#8221; reported to be the &#8220;absent service&#8221; right now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <em>The Register<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2017\/02\/10\/navy_attack_submarines_all_incapable_putting_sea_report\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gareth Corfield<\/a> relays reports that the Royal Navy has no submarines currently available for sea duty:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>None of the Royal Navy&#8217;s seven attack submarines are deployed on operations at the moment, according to reports, which potentially threatens the security of Britain&#8217;s nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Sun<\/em> reported this morning that six of the seven boats are in maintenance \u2013 except for the seventh, <em>HMS Astute<\/em>, which is still undergoing sea trials.<\/p>\n<p>Her sister <em>Astute<\/em>-class boat, <em>HMS Ambush<\/em>, is still undergoing repairs after ramming a civilian tanker in 2016 while hosting wannabe sub captains undergoing the Perisher submarine command course.<\/p>\n<p>The main uses of attack submarines, as distinct from the four <em>Vanguard<\/em>-class boats that carry the UK&#8217;s Trident nuclear deterrent, are twofold.<\/p>\n<p>As their name suggests, attack submarines can be used to attack the enemy \u2013 or, in the modern world&#8217;s uneasy peace with Russia, trail their submarines and naval vessels around the high seas, gathering vital intelligence on their sound signatures and electronic emissions for later analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Attack submarines can also be used as escorts for other vessels, using their advanced sensors to sweep the seas for hostile ships such as Russia&#8217;s infamous intelligence-gathering trawlers, as well as doing secret squirrel tasks such as dropping off Special Forces in remote shore locations.
