That&#8217;s true, according to a new <a href=\"http:\/\/fred.ifas.ufl.edu\/news\/gmo-knowledge-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>: 84 percent of respondents said they support the labels.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-GMO-labelling-fans.png\" alt=\"Survey of GMO labelling fans\" width=\"400\" height=\"323\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-GMO-labelling-fans.png 400w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-GMO-labelling-fans-150x121.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>But a nearly identical percentage \u2014 80 percent\u2014in the same survey said they&#8217;d also like to see labels on food containing DNA. <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-DNA-labelling-fans.png\" alt=\"Survey of DNA labelling fans\" width=\"400\" height=\"341\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34919\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-DNA-labelling-fans.png 400w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Survey-of-DNA-labelling-fans-150x128.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The study, published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fasebj.org\/content\/early\/2016\/05\/18\/fj.201600598.abstract?sid=ba4e4ca1-bdac-4a89-ad05-da997183fafb\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal<\/em><\/a> last week, also found that 33 percent of respondents thought that non-GM tomatoes &#8220;did not contain genes&#8221; and 32 percent thought that &#8220;vegetables did not have DNA.&#8221; So there&#8217;s that.<\/p>\n<p>University of Florida food economist Brandon R. McFadden and his co-author Jayson L. Lusk surveyed 1,000 American consumers and <a href=\"http:\/\/ageconsearch.umn.edu\/bitstream\/235325\/2\/Manuscript%20Text%20File.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a> [PDF] that &#8220;consumers think they know more than they actually do about GM food.&#8221; In fact, the authors say, &#8220;the findings question the usefulness of results from opinion polls as motivation for public policy surrounding GM food.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>My summary for laymen: When it comes to genetically modified food, people don&#8217;t know much, they don&#8217;t know what they don&#8217;t know, and they sure as heck aren&#8217;t letting that stop them from having strong opinions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t get too smug, fellow Canuckistanis, as I suspect the numbers might be just as bad if Canadians were surveyed in this way: You might have heard that Americans overwhelmingly favor mandatory labeling for foods containing genetically modified ingredients.
