{"id":3335,"date":"2010-04-01T12:11:02","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T16:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=3335"},"modified":"2010-04-01T12:25:58","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T16:25:58","slug":"also-mandatory-sobriety-checks-for-judges-legislators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2010\/04\/01\/also-mandatory-sobriety-checks-for-judges-legislators\/","title":{"rendered":"Also, mandatory sobriety checks for judges, legislators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.national-post.ca\/news\/canada\/ontario\/story.html?id=2738071\" target=\"_blank\">Law Society of Upper Canada<\/a> is planning to do mandatory random drug testing on law students starting this fall:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The move comes in response to requests made by faculty leaders, said Mahamad Accord, director of public relations at the regulatory body. \u201cWhy should we accept a lower standard for professional athletes than we do for society\u2019s guardians of the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although some professors of law view the move as intruding too far into the personal lives of lawyers and students, others applaud the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawyers play an essential role in society and the impact of drug-addicted lawyers is demonstrable and negative,\u201d according to Professor Shubert at Osgoode Hall. \u201cThese changes are long overdue and will have a tangible benefit for legal aid recipients.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But I&#8217;m exaggerating in the title to the post. The guidelines don&#8217;t go that far . . . but they probably should.
