{"id":32519,"date":"2015-08-26T05:00:11","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T09:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=32519"},"modified":"2015-08-25T21:29:57","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T01:29:57","slug":"organic-food-recalls-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2015\/08\/26\/organic-food-recalls-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Organic food recalls on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It must be a trend if even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/21\/business\/recalls-of-organic-food-on-the-rise-report-says.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> is reporting on the increasing number of food safety recalls involving organic food:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>New data collected by Stericycle, a company that handles recalls for businesses, shows a sharp jump in the number of recalls of organic food products.<\/p>\n<p>Organic food products accounted for 7 percent of all food units recalled so far this year, compared with 2 percent of those recalled last year, according to data from the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture that Stericycle uses to compile its quarterly report on recalls.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012 and 2013, only 1 percent of total units of food recalled were organic.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Pollack, a vice president at Stericycle, said the growing consumer and corporate demand for organic ingredients was at least partly responsible for the increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s striking is that since 2012, all organic recalls have been driven by bacterial contamination, like salmonella, listeria and hepatitis A, rather than a problem with a label,\u201d Mr. Pollack said. \u201cThis is a fairly serious and really important issue because a lot of consumers just aren\u2019t aware of it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It must be a trend if even the New York Times is reporting on the increasing number of food safety recalls involving organic food: New data collected by Stericycle, a company that handles recalls for businesses, shows a sharp jump in the number of recalls of organic food products.
