Western interest in India\u2019s armed forces is considerably slighter, largely because India looms far smaller in U.S. strategic thinking and is viewed as a potential partner rather than probable military adversary. But there\u2019s a large and growing volume of writing on Indian military affairs, almost all of it in English, with cutting-edge books or articles appearing every month. So where should one begin?<\/p>\n<p>Each service has its own doctrine and\/or strategy \u2014 most recently the army in <a href=\"http:\/\/ids.nic.in\/Indian%20Army%20Doctrine\/indianarmydoctrine_1.doc\" target=\"_blank\">2004<\/a>, the navy in 2009 (remarkably, it is not available online), and the air force in 2012 (the <a href=\"http:\/\/indianairforce.nic.in\/pdf\/Basic%20Doctrine%20of%20the%20Indian%20Air%20Force.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">official link<\/a> is \u2014 perhaps aptly \u2014 perpetually broken, but you can get it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/109721067\/Basic-Doctrine-of-Indian-Air-Force-2012-PDF\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) \u2014 but these are of limited use, not least because they\u2019re not written in close coordination with other services or with a coherent national military strategy in mind.
